Barry Jenkins To Direct Zendaya-Starring A24 Biopic ‘Be My Baby’

Upcoming from A24, a biography about the iconic music figure Ronnie Spector, titled “Be My Baby“. Barry Jenkins, an Academy Award winner, will be directing this biographical drama. Since 2020, Zendaya has been associated with the project.

Zendaya is anticipated to portray the renowned ’60s musician in an upcoming biographical film. Prior to her passing in 2022, Spector served as executive producer on the project and personally selected Zendaya for the role. The movie is reportedly based on Spector’s 1990 memoir, “Be My Baby: How I Survived Mascara, Miniskirts, and Madness, or, My Life as a Fabulous Ronette,” co-written by Vince Waldron. The film will delve into Spector’s life, exploring the circumstances surrounding her turbulent relationship with producer Phil Spector. Dave Kajganich is set to pen the screenplay.

Veronica Bennett, later known as Phil Spector’s wife and famously recognized as the frontwoman of the 60s girl group, The Ronettes, gained popularity with hits like “Be My Baby,” “Baby I Love You,” and “Walking in the Rain.” Her distinctive style featured a towering beehive hairdo, cat-eyed makeup, and tight clothing. In 1968, she adopted her husband’s surname professionally after marrying music producer Phil Spector. However, their marriage was troubled, with Phil controlling Veronica to the point of keeping her as a virtual captive. This led to Veronica developing alcoholism during their relationship. In 2009, Phil was sentenced to 19 years in prison for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 81. The film based on her life is being produced by Zendaya, A24, Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Mark Itkin, and Tom Shelly.
