Batman Returns’ Real-Life Animal Attack Behind-The-Scenes Is Low-Key Terrifying

As a gamer with a penchant for movies and a vivid memory of the 90s, I can’t help but reminisce about the iconic moments from those times. And one such moment that still tickles my funny bone is the infamous monkey incident on the set of “Batman Returns.” You know, the one where Danny DeVito’s character, the Penguin, had an unexpected visitor – a monkey with a taste for his costume’s padding. It’s not every day you hear about a monkey biting someone’s balls on a movie set, let alone while they’re dressed as a penguin!

In “Batman Returns” from 1992, I (as the Penguin played by Danny DeVito) faced some setbacks due to Batman (Michael Keaton). However, an unforeseen challenge arose during filming when I acquired an animal-themed nemesis of my own. Although my character was penguin-themed, he also had connections with various zoo creatures. Working with these animals can be risky, as I discovered firsthand.

Man, lucky I downloaded this video since the YouTube account that posted it disappeared.

To ensure safety and authenticity… here’s a scene from Batman Returns featuring a monkey nipping at Danny DeVito’s character.

As I stepped into the Penguin suit for filming Batman Returns, I walked down the steps, drooling and making sounds, when suddenly a monkey came hurtling towards me – right at my costume’s padding, thankfully! It turns out that the monkey wasn’t trying to attack me randomly; it just got spooked by the big, drooling Penguin in front of it. Quite an unexpected encounter on set, but I’m glad it didn’t add to the discomfort of playing that iconic character!

DeVito made his Penguin as scary as possible

It’s not surprising that the monkey felt startled by Danny DeVito’s portrayal of the Penguin in “Batman Returns”. Besides the detailed makeup and costume, he went above and beyond to make the character as repulsive as possible. In fact, DeVito ate the uncooked fish you see the Penguin eating on screen, which wasn’t even the most unusual thing he consumed for the role. The weirdest thing he put in his mouth was a concoction of spirulina and mouthwash that created the disgusting dark spittle seen coming from the character’s mouth.

Despite finding the experience rather unpleasant, it appears the actor greatly appreciated the chance to be part of “Batman Returns,” even keeping various props as mementos. This might explain why he has thoughts about Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the Penguin in “The Batman.” When asked about Farrell during a lie detector interview with Vanity Fair, DeVito responded, “Oh, Colin? I adore Colin. He’s an amazing person. [However], my Penguin was superior… Was that the truth? Indeed, it was, as far as I’m concerned [laughs].”

Although Farrell portrays a character with numerous prosthetics, his version of the Penguin is less eccentric compared to the original. This means that while fans may have varying opinions about which actor played the Penguin best, it’s reasonable for DeVito to believe that his peculiar portrayal of the antagonist still stands as the most iconic.
