BBC and ZDF Team Up on High-End Drama

BBC and ZDF are teaming up in a fresh collaboration that encourages creators to develop captivating, scripted programs tailored for Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs), with an emphasis on top-tier dramas.

British and German television networks have already jointly greenlit two productions: the espionage thriller “Honey,” produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd, which was earlier announced, and the second season of “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” starring Emma Myers from “Wednesday.” This co-production is also being made in collaboration with Netflix by Moonage Pictures.

The partnership aims to “leverage the key competencies of two prominent European public broadcasting entities. This means merging ZDF’s expertise in transnational TV productions with the BBC’s success in creating popular scripted series.

Nadine Bilke, ZDF’s CCO, stated that the BBC’s approach to programming aligns perfectly with our objectives. The BBC’s dedication to generating content that resonates with viewers mirrors our own ambition. Collaborating on productions like “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder“, a gripping young adult narrative, and “Honey“, an impressive European-focused event series, broadens our appeal to younger demographics and adds a European angle to our content.

Lindsay Salt, BBC’s drama director, stated: “Joining forces with ZDF, known for its robust creative standing, offers a thrilling chance to enhance our content. As public broadcasting entities face escalating financial hurdles, this partnership paves the way for collaboration, enabling us to continue supporting top-notch storytelling from throughout the U.K., nurturing talent, and maintaining our creative ambition.

She went on to say: “Currently, we have two dramas running, and there are even more shows in development. We’re excited to collaborate further with ZDF to provide BBC viewers with exceptional scripted TV content.
