As a longtime fan of Strictly Come Dancing, I have witnessed the magic it brings to British television and the joy it spreads across the nation. However, recent events have tainted this beloved show with allegations of bullying and abusive behavior towards its participants, which is truly disheartening.
The BBC completed an investigation regarding former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice following accusations of “unkind and abusive” actions made by actress Amanda Abbington on the popular reality dance series, Strictly Come Dancing.
The program, modeled after America’s “Dancing with the Stars,” consistently graces British TV screens. However, following concerns raised in July regarding two performers, including Pernice, the station implemented additional welfare measures to ensure a safe and fair environment for all participants.
Graziano Di Prima departed from the show after Zara McDermott, a previous reality star and dance partner of his in last year’s series, expressed that watching videos of their time together on the program was “extremely troubling.” Di Prima apologized and stated he deeply regrets his actions. He explained that his intense desire to win may have influenced his training routine. Meanwhile, Pernice has denied the accusations against him, assuring his followers: “I will return.
Abbington faced a large amount of cruel online harassment from supporters of Pernice after she chose to reveal the mistreatment she experienced backstage.
In response to the completion of their investigation on Monday, the BBC shared with The Hollywood Reporter that they treat all allegations of bullying and harassment with utmost gravity. They emphasized that the thoroughness of this review required time, given its intricate nature, and they were committed to carrying out a comprehensive and rigorous process.
Strictly Come Dancing is a program that families watch, so it’s only natural that we hold it to a very high standard. Although the competition can be challenging, difficult, and taxing, we aim for the show to ultimately be uplifting and transformative. It’s unfortunate when not everyone who’s participated in the show has had a positive experience.
The channel acknowledged that some, but not all, of the complaints lodged have been found to be valid. They expressed their apologies to Amanda Abbington for her courage in speaking out, and thanked her for her participation. BBC News stated that while instances of verbal bullying and harassment were confirmed, allegations of physical violence were not substantiated.
The company stated that while the production team attempted to solve the problems as they perceived them, unfortunately, their efforts proved insufficient in the end.
The revised care protocols now require a team member to be present during training rehearsals in the studio at all times. Furthermore, two new positions have been created within the show specifically for welfare support: a Celebrity Welfare Coordinator and a Professional Dancer Welfare Coordinator. Additionally, there will be extra training provided for dancers, staff, and crew members.
Furthermore, the BBC placed 15 individuals as observers in training rooms during rehearsals. These individuals record daily logs detailing breaks, warm-up sessions, and rest intervals.
All famous celebrities and skilled dancers are given a preliminary psychological evaluation before starting the series, along with other adjustments. The statement continued, “We are committed to examining if there’s anything else that needs to be addressed.
