As a lifelong enthusiast of international media and a connoisseur of Korean dramas and documentaries, I am absolutely thrilled by this recent collaboration between BBC Studios and KOCCA! With my years spent binge-watching every available episode of “Boys Over Flowers” and “Reply 1988,” and my endless scrolling through YouTube for that perfect Korean documentary on everything from food to history, I can confidently say that this partnership is a game-changer.
BBC Studios has forged a fresh partnership with a South Korean firm to broaden the creation, financing, and dissemination of Korean TV shows.
As a passionate gamer, I’m always on the lookout for fresh, engaging content, and that’s exactly what KOCCA has been working on lately. They recently struck a deal with BBC Studios and Viu, a popular streaming platform in Southeast Asia, to tackle some issues in our domestic broadcast and video production scene. Issues like escalating drama production costs and a dwindling number of documentaries being produced. It’s exciting to see them taking steps to improve our gaming and content-viewing experience!
KOCCA intends to achieve a wide range of genres in Korean content and ensure steady growth in international markets by collaborating with two organizations that boast exceptional production skills and powerful global streaming services.
BBC Studios, a branch of the British public TV network BBC, manages content creation and distribution through its network of 55 channels worldwide. Viu is a streaming platform active in 16 countries spanning Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, providing both free and paid on-demand video services.
Ryan Shiotani, who holds the position of Senior Vice President for Content at BBC Studios Asia, expressed his delight about the partnership between BBC Studios and KOCCA. This collaboration aims to share factual K-Content with audiences throughout Asia and beyond, via their network of both linear and streaming channels. South Korea’s creative industry is vibrant and dynamic, and there are numerous compelling Korean narratives waiting to be shared with a broader audience. Through this new partnership with KOCCA, they plan to create, co-produce, and distribute Korean documentaries, which will help shape the future of the global broadcast and video content industry.
Lo, Viu’s chief operating officer, commented: “Korean content is a key component in our offerings on the Viu platform. We are thrilled to deepen our longstanding alliance with the Korean entertainment sector by partnering with KOCCA. This collaboration enables us to bring top-tier Korean shows to our audience. This partnership transcends simple business ties; it signifies a long-term commitment to shaping the future of global broadcast content industry.”
