Initially, Remo D’Souza kicked off his journey in the movie world as a dancer and choreographer, lending his skills to films such as Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar and Saathiya. After ten years, he switched gears to directing, debuting with Faltu. As he delves into the streaming platform realm with Be Happy, an emotional father-daughter narrative that also includes dance, he recently clarified about the film being categorized as dance-centric, saying, “The dance element could have been different, but it worked well for this particular story.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Director Remo D’Souza, famous for producing dance-focused movies like the ABCD series, admitted that dance wasn’t initially where he felt most comfortable. He pointed out that if dance had been his natural territory, his debut directorial project would have been a dance movie.
Initially, he didn’t start with dance-related films; instead, he began with Faltu, an educational drama. It wasn’t until he participated in a dance reality TV show that sparked his interest in the genre. He found it intriguing because dance movies were not common in Indian cinema at the time.
Remo admitted that the popularity of his dance-focused movies earned him fame, but it also pinned him down as primarily a dance movie director. He elaborated that after the initial ABCD film was a blockbuster, its follow-up, ABCD 2, too saw massive success, reinforcing his image as a dance filmmaker.
It was pointed out that, within his field, labels get attached swiftly. Even though he has directed a superhero film (“A Flying Jatt”) and an action film (“Race 3”), he is predominantly linked with dance movies.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: In my perspective, “Be Happy” is more than just a dance movie; it’s an emotional journey of a loving father and his daughter. The central character, played by Abhishek Bachchan, learns to dance not for his own sake, but to support his daughter’s dreams. Dance here plays a supporting role, enriching the heartwarming story of paternal love and aspirations.
In his opinion, the core of the movie resides in its emotional depth, and dance seamlessly complements the storyline. Additionally, he offered a relatable observation about how kids view their parents. He pointed out that though he may be recognized as a public figure, at home, he’s just a dad – an insight that has given him a humbling dose of reality.
Be Happy also stars Nora Fatehi and Nassar. It releases on Amazon Prime Video on March 14, 2025.
