Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Battles Transformers One For The Top Spot At The Weekend Box Office

As a seasoned gamer and cinephile, I can’t help but marvel at the box office dominance of Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. September, a month often overlooked by studios, has once again proven to be a goldmine, with this film firmly establishing itself on the list of all-time September hits.

Typically, major films don’t premiere in September as studios tend to release them during summer or towards the end of the year. However, September isn’t devoid of successful movies, and Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has undoubtedly earned a spot among those successes. Despite not surpassing the September opening weekend record set by Andy Muschietti’s IT in 2017, the film has been commanding since its premiere.

Hey there fellow gamers! This past weekend at the box office, Josh Cooley’s Transformers: One gave a tough fight, but it was Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice that triumphed yet again, claiming the top spot for the third week in a row. Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance and Alexandre Aja’s Never Let Go also made their appearances, adding new chills to the spooky season lineup. Stay tuned as we dive deeper into the Top 10!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Sits At The Top Of The Box Office Again, Hitting $300 Million Worldwide

Over the weekend just gone, I found myself drawn into two different worlds – one of comedy and the other of horror. While James Watkins’ “Speak No Evil” offered a relatively mild challenge to the laughter-inducing “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”, it was the latter that truly stole the show. With an impressive $54.4 million haul from Friday to Sunday, compared to the $11.4 million raked in by the horror remake featuring James McAvoy, it’s clear who the crowd favored this time around. The race for the top spot was closer than ever, but as I checked The Numbers on Sunday morning, it seemed that the Tim Burton film had once again claimed its third box office victory.

From one weekend to the next, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” experienced a decrease in its viewership by half once more, yet it managed to pull in another $26 million, boosting its total domestic earnings to an impressive $226.8 million. This significant box office success places it among the top contenders for 2024, as it has outperformed all but four other major releases this year in terms of ticket sales within the U.S. and Canada. As its run continues, there’s a possibility that it will secure a position among the top four highest-grossing films of the year. However, it still needs to surpass Lee Isaac Chung’s “Twisters” ($267.2 million) and Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” ($282.1 million) to achieve this feat.

The movie “Beetlejuice” was a costly production, having a budget of $100 million. However, the financial agreements made with cast and crew members to cut costs are expected to bring substantial returns. Notably, it has garnered success domestically and its fanbase continues to expand internationally as well.

The film is doing exceptionally well in the U.S. and Canada compared to other regions, but it has earned more than $100 million from foreign countries, boosting its global box office earnings to a staggering $329.8 million. This makes it the 16th highest-grossing film worldwide this year, and with just $5 million left to go, it could surpass Justin Baldoni’s “It Ends With Us” in total earnings.

Is there a strong possibility that the huge box office earnings will encourage the production of a sequel, which could logically bear the title “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“? Although no formal announcements have been made, such an outcome wouldn’t be unexpected at this stage.

Barring Changes In The Final Numbers, Transformers One Has To Settle For Second Place

On Sundays, the box office figures shared across the industry aren’t definitive (since they don’t include Sunday night screenings), but if current sales and predictions remain consistent, Transformers One will likely come in second place during its opening weekend. It’s not the largest debut for an animated film this summer, as we’ve also had Kelsey Mann’s Inside Out 2 and Chris Renaud’s Despicable Me 4, but it still managed a decent $25 million.

Compared to the year 2024, that figure places it as the 21st largest opening weekend of the year, surpassing Mark Dindal’s “The Garfield Movie” with a gross of $24 million but falling short of Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” which earned $25.5 million during its opening weekend.

In contrast to the impressive critical acclaim for “Transformers One,” its box office performance has not matched the success of other movies within the franchise. For instance, it generated significantly fewer ticket sales than “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” by Steven Caple Jr., released last year, which raked in $61 million during its domestic debut. On the positive side, “Transformers One” outperformed Travis Knight’s animated film “Bumblebee” in its opening weekend, with $21.7 million compared to the latter’s $20.8 million in December 2018. However, it’s worth noting that “Bumblebee” was not a flop, ultimately earning $464.7 million globally before leaving theaters.

Never Let Go And The Substance Occupy The Middle Of The Top 10

This weekend, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Transformers One fought for the top spot in the Top 10, but ended up swapping positions instead. Meanwhile, new entries Never Let Go and The Substance found themselves in fourth and sixth place respectively. Halle Berry’s chilling tale of motherhood brought in $4.5 million, while Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley’s intense body horror film earned $3.1 million.

Similar to many other horror movies that became hits, these two films have a significant edge because they were made at relatively low costs. According to Deadline, the budget for “Never Let Go” was approximately $20 million, while “The Substance” cost around $17.5 million. With Halle Berry receiving critical acclaim and some critics, including myself, praising Coralie Fargeat’s film as the best of the year, both titles are expected to maintain a strong presence on the big screen for a long time, potentially securing them the title of successes in the future.

Over the upcoming weekend in September, we have a fantastic lineup!
