Catherine O’Hara Dazzles as Delia Deetz
Among the many highlights of the eagerly anticipated sequel, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“, stands out Catherine O’Hara’s captivating portrayal of Delia Deetz. Her performance as Lydia’s quirky stepmother was nothing short of mesmerizing and she undeniably stole the spotlight. The character was more fully developed in the horror-comedy, allowing her to truly shine, and fans were thrilled to see her interact more with the mischievous and sinister Betelgeuse.
Watching Delia confront Betelgeuse in the spiritual waiting area, unbothered by his mischievous ways but visibly irritated instead, had me in stitches. It was amusing to see her assert herself and adopt a fiery demeanor towards the supernatural world. Her transformation was quite entertaining. Delia served as a mentor for Lydia, often reminding her of her own rebellious past when she was like Astrid, causing trouble with her defiant attitude. The dynamic between Delia and Lydia completed the circle as Delia became a confidant to the troubled Lydia, offering advice and insights into Astrid’s behavior.
In the world of cinema, I couldn’t help but notice that Catherine O’Hara seemed to channel some of Moira Rose’s dramatic flair from Schitt’s Creek as Delia in this movie. Her performance during her emotional outbursts for an art project was nothing short of hilarious! She even took it upon herself to inform Astrid about the passing of her grandfather, and let me tell you, her theatrics were a sight to behold.
Burton Delivers a Heavy Dose of Nostalgia
Apart from O’Hara’s outstanding portrayal in the highly anticipated movie, viewers were delighted and reassured that the sequel managed to retain the charm and spirit of the initial film without attempting to transform into something it wasn’t. The 1988 classic had a meager budget of $15 million with only $1 million allocated for visual effects, and Tim Burton opted for stop-motion and puppetry to emulate the style of B movies and intentionally create effects that appeared low-budget and artificial. Contrasting this, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had a significantly larger budget of $100 million, but Burton opted against relying on CGI and special effects to stay faithful to the original’s essence instead.
In the movie “Beetlejuice,” there are several nods to ’80s style, such as using Harry Belafonte’s classic song “Day-O” sung by a choir at Charles’ funeral. Similarly, Burton includes an extravagant musical performance during the film’s finale, where Betelgeuse and the Deetz girls perform a lively version of Richard Harris’ “Macarthur Park” at Delia’s wedding ceremony. Additionally, the opening scene of the sequel shows a camera sweeping over the small town of Winter River, Connecticut, which is also a miniature model of the community built by the Maitlands.
The sequel also includes various homages and nods to earlier works, such as a scene featuring “The Handbook for the Recently Deceased,” Lydia wearing her famous red wedding dress during Betelgeuse’s attempt at remarriage, the return of beloved character Bob the shrunken head, and the reappearance of massive sandworms in the desolate wasteland. The film’s success as a global sensation can be attributed to the nostalgia factor, with viewers finding solace in seeing Tim Burton dealing with his inner struggles, reuniting familiar faces, and creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the original’s warmth. In a positive review by CBC Radio, they commented, “It’s reassuring to witness Tim Burton confronting his personal issues, reassembling old acquaintances, and summoning the affectionate vibe from the initial film.
Dafoe’s Ghost Detective Makes a Splash
In the highly anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, it was a shrewd move for both director Tim Burton and the studio to cast Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson. This acting veteran, known for his versatility, brings life to the character of a ghost detective who was once a B-movie action star before meeting an untimely death on set. In the afterlife, he’s tasked with investigating supernatural crimes, and with the flair of a seasoned movie star, he sets out to rectify the chaos caused by Betelgeuse, the Deetzes, and Dolores in a dramatic fashion.
In a lively manner, Jackson draws upon his acting skills and experience to chase down the mischievous villains, occasionally using cue cards for preparation and inspiration as he rallies his team to find Lydia and Betelgeuse. It was quite entertaining watching Jackson request Astrid and Lydia to take a quick photo with him before capturing the troublesome poltergeist. The seasoned actor’s portrayal of the campy and whimsical character in this film was truly memorable, adding an amusing touch to his performance.
Monica Bellucci was exceptionally captivating as Delores, moving between the afterlife and Earth in search of Betelgeuse while leaving chaos and destruction behind. The new characters only served to enhance the film’s charm and eccentricity, making “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” a delightful addition to the acclaimed sequel. With an impressive ensemble cast and Tim Burton’s signature style on full display, it’s no surprise that this film has become a global sensation, receiving both critical acclaim and commercial success as well as serving as a worthy successor to the original ’80s classic. Currently, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is playing in theaters for your viewing pleasure.
