Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Opening Weekend Result is Frighteningly Good

As a lifelong cinephile who’s seen more movies than I care to count, I can confidently say that the return of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has sent shockwaves through the industry. Thirty-six years may have passed since Tim Burton first unleashed this mischievous specter on our screens, but Michael Keaton’s performance as the beloved character has proven that some things are timeless.

Even as the chillier winds of football season blew in, the NFL’s comeback didn’t even slow down the box office sensation, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, not one bit. It seems that this mischievous ghost with a zest for life still has quite the pull – over $100 million’s worth, to be precise! Hard as it may be to fathom, 36 years have passed since Tim Burton first brought Beetlejuice to the big screen in 1988. Yet, the long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, didn’t skip a beat during its opening weekend.

Michael Keaton’s comeback as his cherished role grossed approximately $110 million within the U.S., according to The Numbers, taking the number one position. Interestingly, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’s opening-weekend earnings almost matched the all-time record for a film debuting in September. In fact, only about $13 million separated Tim Burton’s much-anticipated sequel from It, which currently holds the record as the highest grossing September release.

The 2017 movie version of Stephen King’s famous novel, titled the same, remains undefeated as the top September opening weekend earner of all time, grossing an impressive $123.4 million. Interestingly, however, Beetlejuice managed to secure the second spot on this exceptional list, thanks to its outstanding box office performance (data from Box Office Mojo).

Top 5 September Opening Weekends of All-Time (Domestic)

  1. It ($123.4 million)
  2. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($110 million)
  3. It Chapter Two ($91.1 million)
  4. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75.4 million)

On September 6, the first day of release for Beetlejuice’s sequel, directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, demonstrated an extraordinary start to its cinematic journey. The opening day earnings of $41.8 million overshadowed expectations, making it the dominant film in theaters nationwide. In contrast, Deadpool & Wolverine, released on the same day, garnered a mere $1.7 million. It seemed that audiences were eagerly rushing to catch a glimpse of Beetlejuice, the charismatic ghost, undeniably proving its popularity!

Over the weekend, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice remained at the top, raking in an additional $41.8 million. Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine moved up to second place slightly, earning $2.2 million. However, even on Sunday, the Beetlejuice sequel held its ground as the clear leader, albeit with a lower intake of $26.4 million.

However, Beetlejuice’s impressive opening weekend earnings of $110 million significantly outshone all other films. For just the second time since its release on July 26, Deadpool & Wolverine came in at a distant second place with $7.2 million. Reagan claimed third place with $5.2 million, while Alien: Romulus took fourth place with earnings of $3.9 million. Lastly, Blake Lively’s romantic drama, It Ends with Us, finished the Top 5 with box office receipts of $3.8 million.

A fresh arrival, “The Front Room” from A24, has barely made it into the Top 10 list. This Brandy-infused horror thriller earned a spot at number 10 with a box office take of $1.7 million. On the other hand, another debutante this weekend, “Red Room” by Utopia, started its run in just 50 theaters, pulling in only $40,295.

Beginning this Friday, September 13th, James McAvoy’s horror film “Speak No Evil” is set to startle audiences. Joining it in the fall movie lineup next weekend will be the action-packed “The Killer’s Game,” led by Dave Bautista. Director Justin Folk’s documentary “Am I a Racist” might not receive as much attention, but horror enthusiasts can look forward to revisiting a classic as “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” will be screening in cinemas on September 10th, 13th, and 15th to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
