‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Tracking for Huge September Opening with Possible $80M

As a die-hard fan of Tim Burton’s unique cinematic universe, this news about the long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel has me positively ecstatic! The original film was a cornerstone of my youth, and the thought of revisiting the whimsical yet eerie world it created is absolutely thrilling.

Talk about juicy.

According to insiders privy to data from a top-tier market research firm like NRG, Tim Burton’s much-awaited film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” produced by Warner Bros., is projected to generate an opening weekend gross of up to $80 million at North American cinemas when it debuts on September 6.

Warners is taking a cautious approach, estimating between $65 million and $75 million, as the tracking data has been inconsistent recently, sometimes underestimating and other times overestimating.

Regardless of the interpretation, the upcoming fantasy horror-comedy is projected to rank among the most financially successful September movie premieres ever, without considering inflation adjustments. Leading the pack are 2017’s “It” (with $123 million) and its sequel “It Chapter Two” from 2019 ($91.1 million), both produced by New Line/Warner Bros. In second place comes Marvel Studios’ “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” which was released during the pandemic in 2021, earning $75.4 million. Completing the top four is New Line’s 2018 film “The Nun” ($53.8 million).

In 1988, Burton released the movie “Beetlejuice,” and now, for a sequel, he’s teaming up once more with Michael Keaton as the lead character. Also reprising their roles are Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara from the original cast. Joining them in this new adventure are actors like Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe.

The plot revolves around Lydia Deetz (Ryder) and her family moving back home after a heartbreaking event, only for complications to ensue when their daughter, Astrid (Ortega), accidentally opens a gateway to the spirit world. In March, the intriguing teaser trailer of ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ premiered, featuring Keaton exclaiming excitedly to a startled Ryder, “The force is free!”

Burton oversaw the making of the sequel based on a script penned by the creators of the Wednesday series, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Seth Grahame-Smith is recognized for contributing to the movie’s plot development.

1988’s movie turned into a beloved cult favorite, earning over $195 million in today’s dollars after adjusting for inflation at the box office.
