AFC Richmond is headed back to the pitch, and their coach is coming with them.
Following over a year of anticipation, Apple TV+ has greenlit a fourth season for its Emmy-winning comedy series Ted Lasso. This decision follows Jason Sudeikis finalizing an agreement to reprise his character as Ted Lasso, the manager of the fictional AFC Richmond soccer team based in London.
Ted Lasso has been an unstoppable force, captivating audiences worldwide with its heartwarming stories, endless amusement, and messages of kindness, empathy, and resilience,” stated Matt Cherniss, Apple TV+’s programming chief. “We’re overjoyed to carry on our partnership with Jason Sudeikis and the talented team behind this remarkable series.
Discussions about a potential fourth season of the series have been circulating ever since it ended in May 2023. The creative team behind the show has stated that their decision would heavily depend on Jason Sudeikis agreeing to return. Bill Lawrence, co-creator and executive producer, mentioned during the Writers Guild of America Awards in February that anyone connected with Ted Lasso would give a similar response: “Our leader, Jason Sudeikis, will address this when he’s prepared. I’m sure he’s currently at SNL’s 50th anniversary show answering the same question.
Information regarding season four is scant at the moment, but in August 2024, THR reported that Warner Bros. TV, the production company behind Ted Lasso, had exercised options for actors Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton), Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent), and Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins) in preparation for a potential fourth season. Apple TV+ hasn’t confirmed any further casting beyond Jason Sudeikis, but industry insiders say Juno Temple is in talks to return as Keeley Jones, and Brendan Hunt (also a co-creator and executive producer) is close to reprising his role as Coach Beard. Furthermore, Jack Burditt (known for Nobody Wants This and 30 Rock) is joining the series as an executive producer under a new overall deal with Apple TV+.
In a recent statement, Sudeikis hinted at the main topic of the upcoming season by saying, “Since we’re all navigating life in a world where caution has become second nature, in season four, the team at AFC Richmond learns to take the plunge without always looking first. They find out that no matter where they end up, it turns out to be the place they were destined for.
In the final episode of season three, Ted Lasso decided to go back to America so he could be near his son Gus Turner and ex-wife Andrea Anders, suggesting a possible reunion for them. Meanwhile, other characters from Richmond’s team were embarking on different journeys in their lives. Notably, this third season of Ted Lasso has been Apple TV+’s most viewed series to date and ended 2023 as the top original streaming program in the United States based on Nielsen ratings.
In addition to Richard Madden, the third season brought actors like Phil Dunster, Nick Mohammed, Toheeb Jimoh, Kola Bokinni, Cristo Fernández, Billy Harris, Stephen Manas, Annette Badland, and several others onto the screen.
Without a doubt, if there’s a show the world could benefit from seeing more of at this moment, it’s ‘Ted Lasso’,” commented Channing Dungey, head of Warner Bros. TV and WBD U.S. Networks. “We, along with countless fans worldwide, have eagerly anticipated another season, and it’s a wonderful feeling to confirm that it will indeed happen! We express our gratitude to Apple and are excited for Jason and the entire ‘Ted Lasso’ team to return to the field and deliver another season of this extraordinary series.
Ted Lasso, a show originally conceptualized by Sudeikis, Lawrence, Joe Kelly, and Hunt, was inspired by a character played by Sudeikis in commercials for NBC Sports promoting their English Premier League coverage. For season four, they will serve as executive producers, alongside Burditt, Jane Becker, Jamie Lee, Bill Wrubel, writers Goldstein and Leanne Bowen, and Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer from Lawrence’s Doozer Productions.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Sara Walker and Phoebe Walsh, the talented duo, are the writers and producers of season four. Sasha Garron joins them as a co-producer. On staff, we have the brilliant writer Julia Lindon and the astute story editor Dylan Marron. The production house for this amazing series is Warner Bros. TV, working in collaboration with Doozer and Universal TV.
