Bella Hadid Releases Statement on Controversial adidas SL72 Campaign

As a passionate fan of fashion and a follower of Bella Hadid‘s career, I am deeply saddened by the recent controversy surrounding her involvement in the adidas SL72 campaign. Having grown up learning about the tragic events that took place during the 1972 Munich Olympics, I was shocked and dismayed when I saw the campaign that seemed to trivialize such a significant historical tragedy.

After the disputed launch of Adidas SL72 shoe promotion, Bella Hadid has broken her silence on Instagram about the controversy. She shared a heartfelt message concerning the criticism, addressing her participation in the campaign which draws inspiration from the 1972 Munich Olympics.

A new shoe campaign went live this month, featuring a significant promotion in New York City’s Times Square. This launch coincided with the 52nd anniversary of the Munich Games, where Israeli athletes and coaches were tragically killed by Palestinian terrorists known as Black September. The event, which took place in 1972, left a deep scar on history. However, the campaign failed to acknowledge these events, leading to widespread criticism for its insensitivity. Israel and the pro-Israel American Jewish Committee voiced their concerns, with the latter issuing a statement condemning the model’s participation due to her public support of Palestinian aid during the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Hadid has addressed the controversy in an Instagram post, stating “I wouldn’t intentionally collaborate with art or projects linked to horrific tragedies. Before the campaign was launched, I wasn’t aware of its historical connection to the 1972 events. I’m shocked, upset, and disappointed by the insensitivity shown in this campaign. More research on all parties involved should have been conducted. My team, adidas’ team, and I should have done better due diligence.” She reiterated her stance against hate, including antisemitism, adding “Palestine is not synonymous with terrorism,” and the campaign unintentionally highlighted an event that doesn’t represent us.” As a Palestinian woman, she expressed pride in her heritage while advocating for peace and an end to antisemitism. She concluded, “Antisemitism has no place in the fight for Palestinian freedom. I stand for love and peace always.”

1. According to Adidas’ recent announcement, they are currently re-evaluating their marketing campaign. Reports suggest that Hadid may be suing Adidas due to a perceived lack of responsibility, although the status of this legal action remains unclear.
