Ben Affleck Reveals How Kevin Feige Transformed Daredevil’s Fate in the MCU

Before Charlie Cox took on the role of Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen, he had previously portrayed the character in a poorly received adaptation known as “Man Without Fear.” During a recent interview about their new film, “The Accountant 2,” where Affleck stars alongside Jon Bernthal from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Punisher, the topic of this earlier role inevitably came up.

Despite persistent speculation that Ben Affleck might reappear as Daredevil in the film “Deadpool & Wolverine,” along with Jennifer Garner returning to her portrayal of Elektra, this did not transpire and likely will not occur. Nonetheless, Affleck has been content to reminisce about his time as Daredevil, attributing a significant distinction between the previous and current Daredevils to the creative vision of one individual: Kevin Feige. During an appearance on “Jake’s Takes,” Affleck also discussed how Feige facilitated the introduction of Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, stating:

His Punisher character was excellent, and Daredevil had an engaging storyline. These shows were produced before Kevin Feige took over Marvel Studios. He brought a consistent tone to these movies that successfully addressed the challenge of creating a balance between the absurdity of superheroes in costume, the level of seriousness, the amount of humor, self-aware winks, and action sequences. This was during a time when visual effects were becoming more convincing, which allowed talented actors like him to truly shine.

Ben Affleck Is Unlikely to Reprise His Role as Daredevil in the MCU

As Marvel Studios expanded the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by introducing the multiverse, the potential characters who could reprise their roles seemed virtually limitless. However, for Marvel Studios, the challenge lies in finding a way to manage an infinite number of realms within a compact narrative framework.

To put it simply, given the abundance of Marvel films and series currently out there, it’s a concern that introducing more multiverse stories might appear hasty or self-serving, lacking genuine intent or depth, if not every new world is shown properly.

The Netflix series “Daredevil,” originally from Marvel Television, and its upcoming continuation, “Daredevil: Born Again,” have presented a more fulfilling portrayal of the character compared to the 2003 movie featuring Affleck. Although it’s intriguing to imagine Affleck interacting with Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock, one might wonder why such a meeting would be necessary. Given that Daredevil’s role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) doesn’t currently involve multiverse connections, introducing Affleck could seem unnecessary or redundant.

In the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Garner’s character Elektra was given an explanation for her presence through The Void. Given Marvel Studios’ limited options to reinstate Affleck, this seemed like the most feasible choice. However, as the multiverse begins to disintegrate in “Avengers: Doomsday/Secret Wars,” even the most implausible events could occur in the coming years.
