Michael Bay’s “Armageddon” continues to be cherished by many fans, even 30 years after its premiere, and it’s considered one of Bruce Willis‘ top performances. The movie is brimming with Bay’s signature style, showcased in the high-octane action, explosions, and heart-wrenching scenes. But filming one of the film’s most emotional sequences was a challenging experience for Ben Affleck. Recently, Bay disclosed that Affleck was battling stomach flu during the shooting of an especially dramatic scene. However, Bay maintains a positive perspective on this situation.
At SXSW, a 60-year-old film director had a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter. They talked about his upcoming movie focusing on parkour, and shared details. Additionally, there were anecdotes recounted from behind the scenes of some of Michael Bay’s top blockbusters. It seems that he particularly enjoyed working on the set of Armageddon due to the team spirit. Interestingly, Ben Affleck had a tough time during one filming session, but it appears things turned out well in the end.
The film was absolutely hilarious! It was as if we were all at a chaotic summer camp, with me as the counselor. Everyone was mischievous and side-splittingly funny. Here’s an honest truth: There was a big paint bucket (around three gallons) next to Ben Affleck during filming. He had a terrible stomach bug, making him feel and look awful. Despite his illness, he had to perform the scene where he vomits. We kept shooting him over and over again. Remarkably, he excels in that role, partly due to his bout of sickness.
The pivotal moment under discussion involves Affleck’s character, A.J. Frost, bidding farewell to Bruce Willis’ Harry Stamper, a figure who serves as both mentor and potential future father-in-law for Frost. In this scene, Stamper selflessly chooses to trigger a bomb in order to save the world, leaving Frost heartbroken and visibly upset. This poignant moment of sacrifice is a hallmark of cinematic tragedy, still capable of stirring deep emotions in viewers, and remains one of the most impactful scenes from ’90s action films.
In the midst of the intense situation, Ben Affleck appears perspired, and his emotional breakdown seems genuine, perhaps because it truly was. The combination of performance anxiety sweat and the aftermath of a stomach bug likely contributed to his convincing portrayal. It’s no surprise that Michael Bay considers it a success. Given how the scene unfolds, it’s hard to argue against his assessment. All in all, it seems like a rather grueling ordeal.
It’s hard to fathom dealing with such a situation. Filming high-intensity movies is demanding physically in itself, but being ill on top of it? That’s an extreme challenge. Moreover, Michael Bay’s swift directing approach might have left Affleck little time to recuperate between takes, only enough for him to recover and resume filming again. Considering that Affleck was a budding actor at the time, he may have felt the need to demonstrate his acting skills despite discomfort. If this was indeed the case, he certainly delivered, as evidenced in the clip below:
Despite the challenging nature of this specific scene for the co-star to film, it’s intriguing to learn that the overall set had a lively, summer camp ambiance. Ben Affleck has been open about giving Michael Bay a tough time over some of the plot discrepancies in Armageddon, but his persistent witty/humorous demeanor suggests a genuine connection between director and actor. I can’t help but hope for another collaboration between these two, with the aim of creating another thrilling sci-fi blockbuster that truly deserves to be watched on the big screen.
