After a long anticipation for its sequel, it appears that the franchise was intended as a trilogy from the get-go. Nearly a decade ago, I witnessed the gripping action thriller of this series grace our cinema screens, leaving fans in suspense about the fate of Christian Wolff, portrayed brilliantly by Ben Affleck. Yet, as revealed by director Gavin O’Connor, we are not yet at the end of this intriguing storyline.
The long-awaited trailer for “The Accountant 2″ has just dropped, following numerous production hurdles that will be discussed further in due time. In an interview with Steve Weintraub from Collider at SXSW, director O’Connor revealed that a trilogy was always the intended plan from the start. He stated:
Since the post-production phase of the first film, I’ve been working with three key individuals: myself, Bill Dubuque, whom I met during the production of that initial movie, and Lynette Howell Taylor, who provided me with the script. Initially, my work was based on the script I received, but as I delved deeper into it, I began collaborating more closely with Bill. Every filmmaker tends to do this: they receive a script, react to its personal impact, and then gradually make it their own artistic expression.
The ideas behind “The Accountant” blossomed due to O’Connor’s professional bond with Dubuque, a fact he later mentioned during an interview.
Bill was fantastic as he encouraged me to explore different paths. As our collaboration blossomed into a strong friendship, I grew very fond of him – he’s truly amazing. We began discussing ideas and I suggested, “Let’s create not one but three of these projects. So, what will serve as the middle piece or the current project?” And that’s exactly what we ended up doing.
‘The Accountant 2’ Was Forced Into Existence by Ben Affleck and His Team
In 2016, “The Accountant” turned out to be an unforeseen worldwide sensation, earning a robust 77% approval from audiences who appreciated its intricate plot and intense action scenes. The tale of Christian Wolff, an accountant-turned-action hero, resonated with moviegoers, and a sequel seemed inevitable. However, from 2018 to 2024, “The Accountant 2” appeared to be one of those projects that would become a footnote in the annals of missed opportunities. That was until the team decided to take on Warner Bros. Discovery regarding the project’s lack of progress. As stated by O’Connor:
In simpler terms, it seems like there was some confusion and changes in leadership at Warner Bros. when we agreed to write the next movie in 2018. There were apparently some issues within the studio that are common these days. When Ben established his own studio, we felt that if they weren’t going to produce the film, they shouldn’t prevent us from making it, which we’ve been trying to do for eight years. Warner Bros. graciously allowed us to leave and we moved straight over to Amazon, as they were already aware of the situation. So, we reached an agreement with Amazon, where Ben’s company, Artists Equity, financed the film, which was a positive experience.
