Berlin According To… Susan Wendt, Managing Director, Sales, TrustNordisk

What’s the one thing the new Berlinale director or the new EFM director should change?

Clear blue skies with calm, still weather – neither rain nor snow. If these conditions aren’t met, please ensure the hot water taps are turned on at the restrooms within the Gropius Bau, where the market is located.

What’s the one thing they should definitely keep as it is?

Market and festival together focusing on onsite and with online only as a small add-on.

What’s your favorite, only-in-Berlin moment from festivals/markets past?

After spending a considerable amount of time in Berlin, it often feels like returning home, with the warmth of familiarity at the hotel, specific eateries, and so on.

What’s your favorite celebrity or industry encounter in Berlin?

More recently, I met Teo Yoo at the TrustNordisk gathering. He’s a genuinely friendly individual, and our conversation flowed effortlessly, leaving a favorable impression on me.

What’s something every visitor to Berlin should see?

As a devoted enthusiast, I can’t help but marvel at the rich tapestry of history that Berlin offers. From the poignant reminders of the Berlin Wall and its exhibition, to the nearby remnants of the German Border, the city pulses with stories waiting to be uncovered. Notably, the list of intriguing museums here seems endless!

Apart from that to stroll around in arts districts like Hackische Höfe…

Attending Berlin during the festival season, rather than ordinary spring, summer, or autumn periods, offers a unique and distinctive experience as you explore and immerse yourself in its locales.

Strategy for staying warm in chilly Berlin?

Essentially, it’s not much different from Copenhagen weather-wise, but when it’s chilly outside, a visit to A Gammel Dansk is certain to provide a cozy comfort.

Strategy for avoiding the dreaded “festival flu”?

One Gammel Dansk a day keeps the ‘festival flu’ away.

Favorite Berlin restaurant or bar?

It’s more accurate to describe it as a health-conscious vegan eatery. However, I must mention that my preferred spot is Bistro Royal, a place where I always feel comfortable – it’s heartening to see familiar faces working there every year.

Place to avoid during the festival/market?

KitKat — once you get in, it’s hard to get out … or is it the opposite?

Top piece of advice for Berlinale newbies?

Practice a few German sentences to get along.
