Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe have agreed to take on roles in the film titled “The Weight“. In this forthcoming historical drama, which is set during the year 1933 in Oregon, they will portray key characters.
Hawke portrays Samuel Murphy, a man grieving over the loss of his spouse, who finds himself incarcerated in a cruel labor camp governed by the ruthless Clancy (Crowe). Desperate to break free and reclaim custody of his daughter Penny, Murphy unwillingly gets involved in Clancy’s dangerous gold smuggling operation. He must navigate treacherous wilderness hazards and the risk of being betrayed by those within his own team as he strives for freedom.
Padraic McKinley, famed for his television work on shows like “Kingdom” and “Debris”, will be the director of “The Weight”, which is scripted by Shelby Gaines, Matthew Chapman, and Matthew Booi, and is adapted from an original story penned by Booi and Leo Scherman.
Collaboratively, Fields Entertainment along with Under The Influence, augenschein Filmproduktion, and Construction Film will undertake the production of a project. This venture has successfully secured €2 million ($2.07 million) in financing from FFF Bayern, the Bavarian regional film fund, and is scheduled to commence principal photography in Bavaria this summer. Simon Fields and Nathan Fields are spearheading production for Fields Entertainment, while Ryan Hawke handles it for Under The Influence. Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo from augenschein Filmproduktion are also involved. Veronica Ferres of Construction Film acts as co-producer, with Ralf Berchtold serving as executive producer.
In collaboration, WME Independent and CAA Media Finance have secured financing for the movie and are sharing its domestic distribution rights; additionally, WME Independent manages international rights and is presenting the project to potential buyers at the European Film Market taking place in Berlin this week. Notably, Capelight Pictures will distribute the film in Germany.
Next week, Hawke is scheduled to be in Berlin for the first public screening of “Blue Moon,” directed by Richard Linklater. In this period drama, Hawke portrays Lorenz Hart, a famous lyricist, alongside Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott.
Ethan Hawke is managed by Creative Artists Agency (CAA), United Talent Agency (MGMT), and attorney George Sheanshang. In contrast, Russell Crowe is represented by George Freeman at Brillstein Entertainment and Eric Brooks at Goodman Genow.
