2025’s opening for the Panorama segment at the Berlin Film Festival will feature “Welcome Home Baby,” a chilling psychological horror movie by Austrian director Andreas Prochaska. This film leads a diverse lineup of 34 movies from 28 different nations, all revealed in the full program on Thursday. The section leader, Michael Stütz, disclosed this program, which tackles issues such as societal divisions, healthcare systems, and democratic vulnerabilities.
As a gamer, I’m diving into a fresh batch of films that twist and turn the horror, body horror, political thriller, and gangster narratives genres. Prochaska’s film offers a modern take on the homeland horror genre inspired by 1950s German-language cinema. The lineup also includes ‘The Ugly Stepsister’, a Norwegian body horror tale, ‘Confidante’, a Turkish political thriller, and ‘Silent Sparks’, a Taiwanese gangster narrative.
This year, I’m thrilled to see German productions making a strong impact, with six films gracing our screens. Among them, Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay offers the intriguing conspiracy thriller titled “Hysteria.” Additionally, five talented female directors are introducing fresh perspectives. One of these is Nele Mueller-Stöfen, who presents her debut feature “Delicious,” and Sarah Miro Fischer unveils “The Good Sister” for the first time as well. Notably, Ina Weisse teams up once more with Nina Hoss for the gripping drama “Cicadas.
The chosen documentaries feature:
– Martina Priessner’s “The Moelln Letters”, delving into the 1993 racist arson incidents in Mölln,
– and Luzia Schmid’s “I Want It All”, concentrating on the renowned German screen icon Hildegard Knef.
The documentaries include Martina Priessner’s “The Moelln Letters” about racist arson attacks in Mölln in 1993, and Luzia Schmid’s “I Want It All” focusing on the life of German screen legend Hildegard Knef.
In this film festival, known as queer cinema, there’s a significant presence. Previous Teddy Award winners are back in Berlin. Sir Isaac Julien showcases his work from 1989, “Looking for Langston,” along with its sequel, “Statues Never Die.” Ira Sachs presents “Peter Hujar’s Day.” The 39th Teddy Award ceremony will honor the Jury President of Berlinale, Todd Haynes, in 2025, with a Special Teddy for lifetime achievement.
International documentaries cover a range of topics, such as “Under the Flags, the Sun,” which delves into the lasting impact of a former dictatorship, and “Bedrock,” which investigates Holocaust memorials. Director Areeb Zuaiter’s “Yalla Parkour” captures the freerunning community in Gaza before the recent conflict.
I’ll be wrapping up this gaming session by announcing the winner of the 27th Panorama Audience Award. This prestigious honor is decided by festival attendees who cast their votes for their preferred documentary and narrative features, all during the last Sunday at the Zoo Palast during Berlinale.
