After years of eager anticipation, Starfield finally graced our screens in 2023, and I must say, it left me feeling rather underwhelmed. As a long-time Bethesda fan who has traversed countless hours across the lands of Tamriel and the wastelands of post-apocalyptic America, I had built up an image in my mind of what Starfield would be – a grand, immersive space opera that would redefine the RPG genre. However, the game seemed to fall short in many aspects.
Story Highlights
- Starfield was 2023’s most hyped-up release, only releasing to lukewarm reception after all.
- Many of the game’s core systems have been challenged, with the title turning out generally bland.
- Bethesda’s design lead, however, says that this is the best game the studio has ever made.
Starfield has been widely regarded as one of the average games of the year by many, but Bethesda’s design lead Emil Pagliarulo sees it differently. In an interview with Games Radar, he stated that Starfield represents the pinnacle of what the studio is capable of achieving in terms of technical brilliance, producing a game that stands shoulder to shoulder with the renowned Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.
In many aspects, creating Starfield represents one of Bethesda’s greatest challenges. We strived to develop something unprecedented, a space simulation RPG that is simply enormous, fitting snugly into an Xbox console. The fact that we managed to achieve this feat makes Starfield a remarkable technical accomplishment. Not only that, but it may well be our finest game yet. However, for us, what matters most is that Starfield possesses its own distinctive character, and now stands proudly alongside Fallout and Elder Scrolls.
I obviously have zero doubts about Starfield being Bethesda’s toughest project to nail down as of this moment, but that “best” part? I don’t find myself sold on that front.
It’s not clear who is at fault in this situation, but perhaps we should consider whether our expectations for Starfield might have been too high. There’s also a possibility that Bethesda may have strayed from its traditional RPG-making principles of varied gameplay and unpredictability when working on this project. It seems reasonable to suggest that both parties share some responsibility in this situation.
Fans Are Super Concerned About The Next Elder Scrolls Game
On Reddit, fans are expressing deep worry about Bethesda’s future game, The Elder Scrolls 6, which is tentatively scheduled for release in 2027. There’s a chance that developments might improve by then.
Starfield’s narrative hasn’t quite lived up to its grandeur yet, compared to its massive scope thus far. Interestingly, the player base dropped by an astonishing 97% just five months after its release. To add to that, the game’s repetitive and monotonous gameplay has been a significant factor in deterring players from revisiting this space-adventure RPG.
eXputer reviewed Starfield, rating it 3.5/5.0, with author Asad Ahmed remarking,
Starfield aspires to greatness and successfully creates a vast universe ready for discovery, yet it falters during implementation.
