Betsy Gay, ‘Little Rascals’ Child Actress and Yodeler, Dies at 96

Betsy Gay, the Little Rascals child actress and award-winning yodeler, has died. She was 96. 

According to a post on Facebook by her friend Robert Satterfield, Gay passed away in Bakersfield, California, on Friday.

She began her career with the “Our Gang Comedies” in 1935, at the age of 6. Later, she became a part of “The Little Rascals.” During her time there, she starred in numerous episodes. Eventually, she was cast as Alfalfa’s girlfriend, Effie, a role she played until 1938. Subsequently, she appeared in various movies such as “Tom Sawyer,” “A Day At The Races,” “Mystery Plane,” and others.

1941 saw her embark on a musical journey following an invitation to star in a Columbia Pictures film alongside Andy Clyde. There, she picked up the skill of yodeling for the movie and subsequently pursued a career in yodeling. Two years down the line, she showcased both her yodeling abilities and acting skills in the film titled “What’s Buzzin Cousin“.

She was a gifted yodeler who claimed victory at the California State Yodeling Championship in 1945, and then again the following year in 1946. During her professional journey, Gay frequently graced radio airwaves with appearances on shows like “The Jimmy Wakley Show,” “The Don Ameche Show,” and “The Hank Penny Show.

In 1946, she sang “Belle of the old Barn Dance” for Superior Record Label and then embarked on a tour that ran along the Eastern seaboard.

She also has credits in films such as “Quality Street,” “A Kiss for Cinderella,” “Heroes Unlimited,” “When You’re in Love,” “Nothing Sacred,” “It Happened in Hollywood,” “The Pinch Singer,” and “Arbor Day” as well as “Came the Brawn.
