As a film enthusiast with a penchant for raw and powerful performances, I must confess that Betty Gilpin‘s portrayal of Lina in “Three Women” left me utterly captivated. Having had the privilege to witness some remarkable acts on the silver screen, I can confidently assert that this role stands among the finest.
Betty Gilpin found herself profoundly impacted by the experience of portraying a suburban housewife going through a transformation in the latest Starz drama, “Three Women”. During a recent interview with MovieWeb, she described the role as “the part of a lifetime”. The series, created and run by Lisa Taddeo, follows three distinct women at a pivotal point in their lives. In this production, Gilpin takes on the character of Lina, joining an impressive ensemble that includes Shailene Woodley (from ‘Big Little Lies’), DeWanda Wise (‘Jurassic World Dominion’), and Gabrielle Creevy (‘In My Skin’).
Lina, who has been in a joyless marriage for almost a decade, unexpectedly becomes involved in an intense relationship that drastically alters her existence. On playing the character, Gilpin expressed, “This was my most cherished role to date. Lisa’s book resonated deeply with me as a woman, as I recognized aspects of myself and each of the women portrayed, in a way I hadn’t articulated before.” She further stated:
As a movie reviewer, I found myself deeply engrossed in this narrative, where our protagonist, much like Hamlet, is wrestling with internal turmoil that echoes far beyond the mundane facade of an Indiana housewife. Lisa’s writing masterfully delves into the heart of her character, portraying her as if she were a complex hero from Shakespearean plays or a daring adventurer like Odysseus or Princess Buttercup in “The Princess Bride.” Despite the ordinary surroundings, the character embodies a sense of epic struggle and profound emotional depth that transcends genre boundaries.
Speaking with MovieWeb, Gilpin expressed that portraying a character whose desires were as prominent as a character in Moby Dick was an incredible gift. She had to convey a wide array of emotions, and this performance was truly impressive, one of her best since her notable role on Peacock’s Mrs. Davis.

Why the Raw Emotions of Betty Gilpin’s Role Felt Risky
As an avid moviegoer, I can personally attest that portraying the character Lina was a challenging yet rewarding experience for me as an actress. It was almost like returning to school again. You see, there’s a certain level of comfort in playing characters who don’t face high-stakes situations, don’t take bold risks, and don’t expose their desires and needs as openly as Lina does. It allows for a more subtle, understated performance, one that carries less risk of making a misstep.
For Lina, it’s simply not her style to portray characters like those in “Ocean’s Eleven” – calm, smooth, and subtle. Instead, she embodies roles that are breathless, noisy, and demanding at every moment. Once she starts chasing after what she desires, she can’t stop… As an actress, it was thrilling, nerve-wracking, and exhilarating to be caught in the whirlwind of her ambitions.
Experience the wheel turning as Three Women makes its premiere this coming Friday, September 13th, at midnight, streaming via the STARZ app. On traditional TV, it will air on STARZ at 10:00 PM in the United States.
