Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F Brought Back Most Of The OG Cast, But There's One Franchise Vet I Wish Would've Returned

As a long-time fan of the “Beverly Hills Cop” franchise, I was both excited and disappointed to watch the latest addition, “Axel F,” on Netflix. While the film was undeniably entertaining with its signature blend of action, comedy, and drama, there was one noticeable absence that left me yearning for more: Lt. Andrew Bogomil, played by the talented Ronny Cox.

Minor spoilers for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F lie ahead, so proceed with caution.

Axel F” brings new and intriguing aspects to the age-old buddy cop genre. Introduced in this installment are characters like Taylour Paige’s Jane Saunders and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Bobby Abbott. Furthermore, the film features Eddie Murphy reconnecting with some old friends from previous movies. As a devoted fan, I was thrilled to see many of the original cast members make a comeback for this 2024 production. Sadly, one beloved franchise actor was missing that I truly hoped would join them once more.

I’d like to clarify that this article isn’t meant to come off as unappreciative towards the decision of not bringing back a particular star from the original cast for “Axel F.” I genuinely enjoyed the film and believe it does justice to the legacy of the series. However, given the number of familiar faces who graced the screen in this installment (which is now streaming on Netflix), I can’t help but notice this absence. In our discussion, we will delve into why this actor was missing from “Axel F” and explore potential ways they could have been incorporated. But first, let me acknowledge the “BHC” stars who made a comeback for this edition.

Which Longtime Beverly Hills Cop Stars Came Back For Axel F?

As a long-time fan of the Beverly Hills Cop series, I was thrilled when I heard that they were making a fourth film. But I couldn’t help but wonder if Eddie Murphy would be the only original cast member to return. Boy, was I in for a surprise!

In addition, Bronson Pinchot’s quirky character, Serge, makes an appearance in the thrilling series. Previously employed at the art gallery run by the nefarious Victor Maitland, Serge later transitioned into dealing weapons. By the fourth installment, he has shifted careers to become a successful high-end real estate agent, lending a hand to Axel and his team in his unique way. Furthermore, Paul Reiser returns to portray Jeffrey Friedman, Axel’s former partner from Detroit. Now holding the position of Deputy Chief, Jeff must once again intervene when Axel uses unconventional methods for law enforcement, albeit with a weary yet humorous attitude.

It’s a delight to have this quartet of actors back in their familiar roles, and each one gets their chance to shine. I’d be telling a white lie if I didn’t express my excitement over seeing Eddie Murphy, Judge Reinhold, and John Ashton bring their characters to life once more on the screen together. Regrettably, unfortunately, one actor who is still alive was missing from this reunion.

Who’s The Franchise Veteran Who Wasn’t Included In The New Movie?

If you’re an avid fan of this cherished film series and have found your way here, then you likely recognize who I’m alluding to. I’m referring to Lt. Andrew Bogomil, portrayed by Ronny Cox in the franchise’s initial two installments. In the first movie, Bogomil is introduced as a strict and disciplined law enforcement officer responsible for supervising Rosewood and Taggert’s actions.

In the end, the lieutenant assigns Taggart and Rosewood to shadow young Axel Foley upon his arrival in Beverly Hills as he probes into Victor Maitland’s activities. Later on, Bogomil joins forces with them to bring down Maitland, and even aids in saving Foley’s job back in Detroit. In the sequel “Beverly Hills Cop II,” Foley repays the favor by helping solve the Alphabet Crimes leading to Bogomil being critically wounded. However, he eventually recovers and is appointed as the new police chief in the film’s conclusion.

A Surprisingly Funny Revival of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” on Netflix, Featuring Eddie Murphy’s Legendary Comedy

In the “Beverly Hills Cop” films, Bogomil may not have been present for the comedic moments but played a significant role in the first two installments. He wasn’t just a supportive friend to Axel Foley, but also provided balance among his colleagues’ excessive behaviors. Although Andrew was largely absent from the 1987 sequel, his keen detective abilities initiated the series of events that unfolded in the movie. Lastly, it’s important to acknowledge the brilliant acting of Ronny Cox, now 85 years old, whose subtle portrayal brought depth to the character.

As a gamer, I find it intriguing that even though Paul Verhoeven, the RoboCop director, has been active recently in the film industry, he wasn’t included in Axel F. It’s bizarre to me that his character was only mentioned through a photo in the movie instead of having him make an appearance himself. The lack of acknowledgment of his absence was also noticeable in 1994’s BCIII, a film that Eddie Murphy still considers a misstep. Some of you might be pondering how Bogomil could have fit into this newest production, and I’ve got an idea that could add some sweet flavor to the story.

How Could Lt. Bogomil Have Been Organically Featured In Axel F?

Ronny Cox’s character didn’t necessitate a large part in the recent streaming film, considering the numerous characters and storylines it already featured. Instead, a brief appearance from Cox would have been ideal. This could have been accomplished through a scene where his character, Bogomil, interacted with John Ashton’s Taggart. Amid the chaos of Taggart trying to handle the film’s main conspiracy, it would have been touching to see him reach out to his former boss for guidance. Not only would this have given an update on Bogomil, but it also would have added a sentimental dimension to Taggart’s character, known for his grouchy demeanor.

From my perspective as a gamer, Axel F is still an enjoyable game without Ronny Cox’s Bogomil character. However, adding him would have added an extra layer of excitement to an already great experience. I can only wait and see if Eddie Murphy, Jerry Bruckheimer, and the team plan on creating another installment in this series. If they do, I’d be thrilled to reach out to Ronny Cox and ask if he’d be interested in reprising his role.

For those wanting to experience “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” for the initial time or revisit it, they can easily do so on Netflix, a top-tier streaming service. Subscribers of this service are able to stream not only “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” but also the first two installments in the series.
