As a music enthusiast who has spent countless hours dancing in dimly lit clubs and singing along to my favorite tunes, I must say that this year’s nominations are nothing short of spectacular!
MTV announced the four social categories and their nominees for its 2024 Video Music Awards.
The voting categories for fans consist of Song of the Summer (sponsored by Hilton), Best Group, along with two freshly introduced ones: VMAs Most Iconic Performance and Best Trending Video.
Voting for the categories will be hosted on MTV’s Instagram Story.
This popular video category honors artists’ videos and/or songs that ignite passion among fans, leading to an abundance of creative content based on the video or song itself. The nominees for this category are Beyoncé, Camila Cabello ft. Playboi Carti, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, Megan Thee Stallion ft. Yuki Chiba and Tinashe. Voting starts on Sept. 2 at 11 a.m. ET and ends on Sept. 3 at the same time.
This prestigious award recognizes the most beloved group that spans across all music genres. The nominees are NSYNC, Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, NCT Dream, NewJeans, SEVENTEEN, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, and Twenty One Pilots. Voting commences on September 3rd at 11 a.m. ET and concludes on September 6th at the same hour.
The favorite Summer 2024 hit will be honored with the song of the summer category, presented by Hilton. Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Kendrick Lamar, Swift and SZA are among the nominees. Fans can vote for this category starting Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. ET until Sept. 10 at 11 am ET.
In the end, fans have one more category to vote on – their favorite standout performance from previous shows. This year’s nominees are unforgettable moments like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Missy Elliot’s joint performance of “Like a Virgin” and “Hollywood”, Beyoncé’s memorable pregnancy reveal during her “Love on Top” performance, and Taylor Swift’s debut VMAs performance of “You Belong With Me”. The voting period starts at 11 a.m. ET on September 10th and ends at the same time on September 11th.
This Friday, MTV has added a “Bonus Voting Week” for all categories, which ends on September 6 at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. The voting for the prestigious “Video of the Year,” sponsored by Burger King, and “Best New Artist,” sponsored by DraftKings, will continue until the event itself.
The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) will make a comeback in New York City, with the event happening at Long Island’s UBS Arena on September 11th, starting at 8 p.m. Eastern/Pacific Time. Taylor Swift, for the second year running, leads the nominations count with twelve. Her song “Fortnight” has garnered nine nominations in total, covering categories such as Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Direction, and now Best Trending Video. Additionally, Swift has been nominated for Artist of the Year and Best Pop.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: Among the heavyweights vying for the top spot, there’s Post Malone with 11 nominations, followed closely by Eminem with 8. Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion, Sabrina Carpenter, SZA all have seven each. Then you’ve got Benson Boone, Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan, Charli xcx, GloRilla, LISA, Olivia Rodrigo, and Teddy Swims, each with four nominations under their belts.
