Beyoncé Trolled Netflix Over Buffering Problems, But I Honestly Thought The Christmas Day NFL Game Went Off Without A Hitch

As a seasoned movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of technological mishaps during live events. However, Netflix’s foray into live streaming sports and events has been nothing short of impressive, especially considering their lack of a traditional Live TV component.

Netflix is making a significant stride by delving into the live event arena, traditionally uncharted territory for the streaming service. They’ve already dipped their toes in this field by broadcasting live events such as Chris Rock’s comedy special, “Selective Outrage,” and “The Roast of Tom Brady.” However, a major milestone came during Christmas, when Netflix aired two NFL games: Kansas City Chiefs versus Pittsburgh Steelers, and Houston Texans versus Baltimore Ravens. This was the beginning of a three-year partnership between Netflix and the NFL, and it seems that things went smoothly, despite Beyoncé playfully teasing the platform prior to the event.

Both were extremely exciting games, but it seems like those with a Netflix subscription were most looking forward to the Texans vs. Ravens game because Texas native Beyoncé was set to perform at halftime. The singer posted a tease for her performance prior to the game to get people even more excited, featuring her playing “Texas Hold ’Em” on the banjo and posing in a big hat. As a joke, her video stopped, and the classic Netflix buffering symbol appeared as a reference to the problems that can happen when streaming. You can see the video from Beyoncé’s Instagram below:

Regardless of the ominous hints suggesting potential issues during the streamer’s management of a significant sports event, everything ran flawlessly. The games themselves exhibited no discernible technical problems, which was reassuring for the streamer and those skeptical about the platform’s ability to handle high internet traffic for live events. Furthermore, fans eagerly anticipating Beyoncé’s halftime performance would have been pleased with the top-notch broadcast quality, allowing them to fully enjoy her stunning, rustic concert experience.

This experience seemed like a preliminary test for the live stream provider, suggesting that a successful broadcast could bolster Netflix’s ambition to organize more live events in the long run. Notably, competitors such as Peacock and Hulu have already ventured into the live event sector, with Hulu set to stream the Oscars for the first time next year. Interestingly, many of these platforms currently offer Live TV services. However, Netflix does not host Live TV at all, instead focusing exclusively on event media, which sets it apart. This could be a sign of things to come for Netflix, particularly since these NFL games mark the beginning of a three-year agreement with the football organization.

It appears that in the near future, many significant sporting events might mainly air on streaming platforms. In fact, it’s not out of the question for the Super Bowl to become a Netflix event at some point down the line. Despite their recent successes, there’s still a significant amount of pressure on them to keep delivering flawless broadcasts. The bigger the game, the more viewers flock to Netflix’s platform, as sports enthusiasts don’t want to miss a single moment of an exciting game. Similarly, music fans wouldn’t dream of missing even a minute of a fantastic halftime performance, especially when it features a big name like Beyoncé. We can only speculate about whether Netflix will maintain this streak of smooth live broadcasts as they expand their reach.

The games were accessible for just a short time following the live broadcast, but fans of Beyoncé can relive her halftime performance through a separate special called “Beyoncé Bowl” on Netflix.
