Beyond Combat: How Clair Obscur’s Paintress Fight Delivers Emotional Damage

In the adventure titled “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33“, gameplay can be both challenging and gratifying. Throughout your journey, you’ll come across an array of significant adversaries, some absurd like the Grosse Tete, while others are particularly difficult, such as the harrowing fight with the Paintress, which inflicts deep emotional wounds upon the player directly.

The expeditions were established with the intention of eradicating the enigmatic entity known as the Paintress, yet they lacked substantial knowledge about the continent and their target. Despite this, year after year, they ventured deeper, inching ever closer to what seemed to be the source of the Gommage. However, it was only Maelle and her team from Expedition 33 who had the opportunity to encounter the elusive Paintress directly.

At first, the inhabitants of Lumiere thought that the woman with white hair who annually altered the numbers on the Monolith was the Artist herself. However, this isn’t entirely accurate, as we discover the true artist when Expedition 33 ascends the Monolith, having journeyed through tainted replicas of places we’ve previously visited (starting from the Meadows and continuing to Lumiere).

This scene carries significant weight, illustrating the journey the players have undertaken from Act I up until the brink of Act II’s conclusion. It’s only now that we encounter the true embodiment of the enigmatic figure known as the Paintress, who shares striking similarities with the Curator. Her appearance is a blend of metal and gold, yet she appears to be devoid of substance, exuding a hollow aura. Strangely, gray petals seem to emanate from her. Intriguingly, her speech seems cryptic as Verso and the entire Expedition come into contact with her.

As the artist, affectionately called the Paintress, anticipated that the Expedition would attempt to undermine her, she stood her ground and made it clear they wouldn’t be stealing her canvas from her. The initial stages were manageable; I personally found it less taxing than Renoir’s struggle, but the unforeseen final phase caught me off guard.

As a devoted fan, I found it strange that the Paintress’ health gauge didn’t fully deplete when the cutscene began. The colossus tumbled, leaving the Paintress looking remarkably feeble on the ground. Verso exclaimed, “No, our battle isn’t over yet,” and we were thrust into the final phase of combat. The Paintress was hanging by a thread, her health points dwindling. The background music switched to a soft, poignant melody, and then it struck me.

The Paintress’s moves don’t inflict harm on the Expedition, instead targeting the players directly. Her actions served to safeguard an Expeditioner, creating a protective barrier for them, and providing aid to a haphazardly chosen comrade. It was a heavy blow emotionally, as I found it challenging to engage her in battle, perhaps because she appeared frail and vulnerable.

After our team finally bested the Paintress following years of attempts, and countless Expeditioners who had perished along the way, I still felt a deep sense of sorrow, especially after witnessing the heart-wrenching finale between Verso and Maelle. This sadness intensified as I progressed through the Epilogue and began to understand the true nature of events.
