As a seasoned film producer with years of experience under my belt, I must say the Diwali box office battle between Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again and Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The tension leading up to the release was palpable, with the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 team raising concerns about what we felt was an unfair distribution of screens. There were indeed a lot of arguments, but I must admit they were mostly “unfair” – to us!
This Diwali season, Rohit Shetty’s Singham Again and Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 faced off at the box office. Despite the competition, both films ended up as successes. Recently, T-Series head Bhushan Kumar has spoken candidly about the heated exchanges with the Singham Again crew during their clash. He admitted there were numerous disagreements and asserted that they felt it was ‘unfair’.
During a frank discussion with Connect Cine, Bhushan Kumar candidly shared some pre-release tensions between Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham Again. He disclosed that the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 crew had expressed worries regarding what they perceived as an unbalanced screen allocation. In simpler terms, he mentioned that there were numerous disagreements with the Singham Again team because they felt they were not being treated fairly.
Although both films received identical survey scores, the producer emphasized their demand for an equal split of screen time, arguing that their film merited fairness. While he didn’t openly accuse theater chains, he hinted at personal biases influencing the disparity, particularly due to the distributors’ ties with Singham Again. He acknowledged there were intense debates happening behind closed doors.
Bhushan continued by revealing that amidst all the stress, he proposed making early reservations to assess audience interest since Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 was causing quite a stir. Surprisingly, the movie managed to pull in an impressive opening of over Rs 36 crore, even with tough competition.
Initially, there was a lot of tension, but he shared that things eventually became smooth as both films turned out to be successful at the box office. Even though there was a conflict, the Singham Again team promised him they would prevent any financial losses for his movie. After the outcome was certain, they offered their backing to the Kartik Aaryan film.
Bhushan Kumar disclosed that he held talks with Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty to avoid scheduling conflicts, but unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to prevent them. He clarified that he had already scheduled Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 for an OTT release and couldn’t postpone the film. Despite understanding his predicament, Ajay and Rohit also faced their own limitations since the movie, drawing inspiration from the Ramayana, was essential for a Diwali premiere.
In summary, he argued that moving his movie would have postponed Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 to the following year, causing potential financial issues with the budget. Additionally, he suggested that scheduling two large films at the same time can negatively affect box office revenue.
Both Singham Again, under the direction of Rohit Shetty, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 by Anees Bazmee have held their ground at the box office, even amidst fierce competition. Notably, Singham Again has sustained its success following a successful first week and second weekend.
The film reached and exceeded the 200-crore mark on its 12th day after release, an impressive feat given the competition with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3. Likewise, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 also managed to surpass the 200-crore milestone, demonstrating its own immense success.
