As a dedicated follower of current events and politics, I was completely taken aback by President Joe Biden‘s unexpected announcement to end his 2024 campaign over brunch at El Presidente restaurant in Washington D.C. I had been eagerly anticipating the news, preparing for possible leaks and planning my coverage accordingly.
As a devoted follower of political news, I’ve pondered over what could potentially unfold should President Joe Biden decide to call it quits on his 2024 re-election bid. Media professionals, including producers, anchors, correspondents, and executives, have spent countless hours brainstorming a contingency plan for such an eventuality.
“One producer shared that they intended to release the news first, then give a national speech afterwards.”
Instead, the president caught the media brunching.
“Sipping on a Wolf Spritzer at El Presidente restaurant in DC right now, checking out the menu with the other hand.”
Approximately an hour from then, Biden formally announced his campaign withdrawal through a well-timed PDF letter, keeping the information leakage to a minimum. Blitzer swapped out his casual attire for a suit and tie, going live on CNN at midday PT. During that time, CNN was broadcasting a rerun of Fareed Zakaria’s show when the news unexpectedly unfolded.
One week after the surprising attempt on the life of ex-President Donald Trump, television news channels became busy once more.
At 11:04 a.m. on ABC, Rachel Scott from Butler, Pennsylvania reporting for Trump’s rally coverage a week prior, took the lead in presenting a special report. The entire team of ABC anchors, correspondents, and contributors joined her in contributing to the broadcast.
At 11:02 a.m., Hallie Jackson took the helm for NBC’s exclusive broadcast. Later in the day, Lester Holt would step in, not only hosting “NBC Nightly News,” but also leading a two-hour special report which commenced at 4 p.m.
During CBS’s special broadcast, Kristine Johnson initiated the program, followed by Norah O’Donnell’s participation towards the end of the hour. The network intends to air a two-hour special between 3 and 5 pm.
On cable, MSNBC and Fox News appeared to be similarly surprised by the move.
Bret Baier, the primary political anchor at Fox News, made a phone call during the broadcast and described the recent development as a significant change in politics. Tune in to Fox News at 2 p.m. for live coverage as Bret discusses this game-changing event in detail.
On Sundays, Fox promptly assembled their prime-time opinion team, which included Laura Ingraham, Jesse Watters, Sean Hannity, and Mark Levin, to be in the spotlight.
MSNBC, meanwhile, had Biden’s former press secretary Jen Psaki break the news to viewers.
In a more casual tone, White House press secretary Psaki shared her perspective, having worked with him for a year and a half. She expressed her admiration for this exceptional individual and his tenure as president, which surpassed expectations despite facing numerous challenges.
Rachel Maddow soon jumped into the broadcast, expressing similar sentiments: “This is a significant moment in history, one we’ll all recall,” Maddow stated. “And as I ponder the President at this time, truly impressive – what a man, what a patriot, such dedication to our nation.”
MSNBC will have Maddow, Psaki and Nicolle Wallace hosting beginning at 4 p.m..
After being canceled a week prior due to the Trump assassination attempt, “Morning Joe” will air on MSNBC once again on Monday morning.
