‘Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ a Go at HBO Max

According to the principle it’s named after, the cosmos depicted in “The Big Bang Theory” continues to expand.

HBO Max has officially given the go-ahead to “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe,” a new comedy series revolving around Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman), a character with a significant recurring role from the original CBS show. The creators behind the hit sitcom “Big Bang Theory,” Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, along with Zak Penn (known for films like “Free Guy” and “Beacon 23”), are responsible for this production. Unlike previous series such as “Young Sheldon” and “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” this show will blend science fiction elements with humor, offering a unique mix of genres.

The inaugural series selection for the recently renamed HBO Max (previously known as Max) was announced, with its new identity going live on Wednesday. And the title of the series is “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe“.

Casey Bloys, head of HBO and HBO Max Content, expressed his enthusiasm about carrying on the tradition set by ‘The Big Bang Theory.’ Just like the initial series, this new phase wouldn’t exist without the visionary storytelling skills of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, along with Zak Penn, who has added a unique perspective to an already outstanding creative team.

Lorre stated, “I aimed to create something daring that would push me beyond my familiar boundaries. A concept that the characters from The Big Bang Theory would have passionately debated over – some loving it, others hating it.

Actors Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie, who were regulars on “Big Bang,” are set to appear in an upcoming series titled “Multiverse Armageddon.” This show has been in development for two years. The plot revolves around the character Stuart Bloom, who accidentally triggers a multiverse catastrophe by damaging a device created by Sheldon and Leonard. In his quest to fix this disaster, Stuart is assisted by his girlfriend Denise (played by Lapkus), geologist friend Bert (portrayed by Posehn), and the troublesome quantum physicist Barry Kripke (depicted by Bowie). During their journey, they encounter alternate versions of familiar characters from “The Big Bang Theory.” As suggested by its name, things don’t go smoothly.

Writing this show alongside Chuck and Zak has been an absolute blast, and I’m confident that excitement will shine through the screen,” said Prady. “It’s delightful to weave beloved characters from The Big Bang Theory into a intricate science fiction tale laden with mythology they adore, all while preserving its comedic essence – it’s immensely rewarding.

Penn shared, “While I was immersed in a spiritual journey deep within the Amazon rainforest, a homing pigeon delivered a message from Chuck Lorre inviting me to collaborate on a series that characters from The Big Bang Theory would enjoy. The concept intrigued me, so I gathered my belongings and signaled for the next airship. Simultaneously, Chuck dispatched an exploration team to retrieve Bill Prady, who had been trapped in a chunk of arctic ice since ancient times with his shield guarding him. We embarked on this wild project, creating a world envisioned by Chuck and Bill. I feel incredibly privileged to be part of such a talented group.

Lorre, Prady, and Penn serve as executive producers for the show titled “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe“. The production company named after Lorre is responsible, working in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television, a studio where Lorre has had a long-standing relationship.

Channing Dungey, head of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD U.S. Networks, said that Chuck and Bill’s creation, ‘The Big Bang Theory’, has given us one of the most lasting comedies of our era, and we eagerly anticipate seeing more cosmic fun with this upcoming series. With Zak’s gift for storytelling, this new version will keep the spirit of the beloved original while offering a unique twist. We’re grateful to HBO Max for embarking on this next journey with us.
