As a gamer with a deep interest in politics and current events, I can’t help but be alarmed and disturbed by Bill Maher‘s reaction to the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump. While I may not always agree with his political views, I believe it is important for public figures like him to use their platform responsibly, especially during times of heightened tensions and potential violence.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been following Bill Maher’s take on recent events, and he certainly has some strong opinions regarding the assassination attempt against former President Trump during his Pennsylvania campaign rally last weekend.
The HBO Real Time host posted a video of himself on stage at his comedy show reacting to the breaking news just hours later.
During the start of his program, Maher clearly and unequivocally condemned [the shooting]. Regardless of your perspective, I find this unacceptable and not a topic for humor. No, I won’t join in with the potentially distasteful jokes some may make about it.
“When I saw that photo today of him with the blood streaming down his face — I don’t want to say the election’s over but … Anything can happen in an election. but Jesus Christ: MAGA nation finally has its full martyr. They loved it when he went to jail. The mug shot. I gotta say, he’s insane and a criminal. But that mug shot? Fucking nailed it. And he [reacted to the shooting] like he rehearsed it! [Got it on] take one! There will be idiot conspiracy theorists who will say, ‘Oh they planned it.’ He gets grazed and the other guy gets [killed] — that’s so Trump. It’s going to work for him. I can see the memes now — ‘the man the libtards couldn’t kill.’ Biden can’t get through a debate and a bullet can’t stop Donald Trump. It almost doesn’t matter who the Democrats put up now.”
“Maher remarked, ‘Whomever is responsible, the aftermath of this shooting has significantly harmed the Left.’ The Left has suffered a considerable loss in the public perception that they are the violent ones and that they do not resort to violence to settle disputes.”
It should be noted the politics and motive of the shooter are currently unclear. The would-be assassin has been identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks. According to CNN, he was registered to vote as a Republican while records show he gave $15 to a Democratic-aligned political action committee in 2021.
Maher went on to say, “When I use the term ‘moral high ground,’ I’m referring to the 2025 Project, a key aspect of the Republican Party, which will officially begin their convention in Milwaukee tomorrow. I’ll be attending – but not for the speeches or political debates. Instead, I’ll be visiting strip clubs. The author of this proposal declared, ‘This is our new plank, our new revolution for America.’ I’ve heard such claims before, ‘there’s a new revolution,’ but this person added an unsettling remark: ‘It’ll be bloodless, as long as the liberals allow it to happen.’ This violent behavior doesn’t occur in isolation. We need to put an end to it.”
“I’m relieved that Trump is alright. Let me tell you, he’s had an extraordinary run of good fortune throughout his life. In 2016, despite losing the popular vote significantly, he managed to win through the Electoral College. And now, as the Democratic party faces internal strife with Biden as his opponent, Trump continues to benefit from this luck.”
If you’re curious about what I had to say at the beginning of my comedy show last night, a few hours after the shooting occurred, here is how I expressed it:
— Bill Maher (@billmaher) July 14, 2024
Maher may have withheld mentioning the specific name of the venue, but according to his tour itinerary, he performed at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota last night.
