Bill Maher Says He “May Quit” ‘Real Time’ Because He’s Tired of Talking About Trump

As a gamer who has been around the block more times than I care to remember, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when it comes to Bill Maher and his long-running show, Real Time. The man has been a staple in my political discourse diet for nearly two decades, providing insightful commentary on the state of our nation with an unparalleled wit and charm.

Could this be the end of Real Time With Bill Maher?

In a recent episode of Bill Maher’s podcast “Club Random”, held prior to the 2024 election in November, the host openly expressed his anxiety about Donald Trump potentially securing another term as President of the United States, saying he was “extremely concerned”.

As a devoted admirer, I find it challenging to wrap my head around this, but I might consider stepping away from my beloved HBO talk show due to the prospect of spending another four years discussing the newly elected Republican president – a topic that no longer sparks my enthusiasm.

Maher went on to say, ‘I’ve been critical of Trump longer than most. I labeled him a fraud before others did. I claimed he’s like a mob boss. I predicted he wouldn’t accept defeat in the election. I was among the first.’

Fonda proceeded to ask, “Well, then how come he’s so hostile to Jimmy Kimmel and not to you?”

As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “Every week, he seems to take issue with me. He regularly posts about me on Twitter. Whenever he catches a glimpse of my show, he tweets something like ‘Poor ratings, loser,’ in what sounds just like his voice.

Since 2003, Maher has been leading the discussion on “Real Time”, a platform where he dissects political and current events with an array of guests. The comedian recently concluded his 22nd season, yet the show was recently given a green light for two additional seasons on HBO.

Later on, Fonda tried to advise the host to consider a different topic instead of Trump, but she explained that the show is about politics. Maher further commented, “There’s nothing else to discuss, and he’ll (Trump) continue to control the headlines just as he always does.

The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to HBO for comment.
