Bill Skarsgård Recalls The Dreams He Had After Playing Pennywise In It, And They Sound Like They’re Straight Out Of A Horror Film

As a fan who has been captivated by Bill Skarsgård‘s chilling performances, I find his experiences with the character of Pennywise to be nothing short of fascinating. The idea that he could not escape the clown’s presence even in his dreams is both unsettling and intriguing. It’s a testament to his dedication as an actor and the impact of such a terrifying role on his psyche.

Describing a character as wickedly evil as Pennywise the Dancing Clown from the “It” movies is likely to have a lasting impact on any actor. For Bill Skarsgård, this experience seemed to linger in his subconscious, resulting in disturbing dreams that could give even horror scripts a run for their money. Now, the actor from “Boy Kills World” has shared further insights into the peculiar, unsettling dreams he encountered following his portrayal of the terrifying clown.

After his work on ‘It’ with Vanity Fair, Skarsgård shared insights into how portraying the Stephen King character had an unforeseen impact on his mind. In his own words:

In these dreams, things were bizarrely mixed-up. It seemed like I was arguing with Pennywise or perhaps even becoming him, wandering through the streets where I used to live, feeling uneasy because I shouldn’t be out in public acting that way. It was a peculiar sensation of trying to differentiate myself from this entity, back in my childhood home, specifically the same apartment I grew up in.

The notion of encountering Pennywise, or transforming into him, while wandering the streets he once knew as a child introduces a strange, psychological element to the actor’s experience in the role. It also highlights that embodying one of the most terrifying modern horror antagonists doesn’t end when the camera stops rolling.

Bill Skarsgård hasn’t only once immersed himself deeply into a challenging and transformative character, but Pennywise was an entirely different experience. His terrifying smile, chilling voice, and unsettling physicality made this role particularly haunting. It’s no wonder that the character lingered in his mind long after the makeup was removed.

The actor from “The Devil All The Time” is renowned for his versatility in acting roles. From portraying an autistic teenager at the start of his career, to embodying a vengeful outcast in “The Crow”, and most recently as Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ remake of “Nosferatu”, this “Barbarian” star continually demonstrates his willingness to delve into darker characters—and we benefit (and shudder) from it.

Interestingly, the actor portraying John Wick in Chapter 4 admitted that although he’s still dealing with the chills from the killer clown character, it’s his upcoming role as an iconic vampire that scares him the most. The actor explained that this character pushes him even further away from his own persona than Pennywise did, necessitating extensive voice work and movement studies, including delving into “dancing with corpses” techniques.

Bill Skarsgård isn’t content with just sticking to one type of role. While he has gained fame for portraying monstrous and dark characters, the actor aims to broaden his range, hinting at future projects in intense dramas and even dark comedies. No matter what role or emotional strain it might bring, the Swedish star is eager to test his boundaries, and truthfully, we’re excited to see him do so.

At present, enthusiasts can appreciate Skarsgård’s skill in immersing himself completely into the darkness, even when it seeps into his dreams. If you’re keen to revisit his terrifying clown days, both chapters of It are available for streaming with a Max subscription. And if you’re eager for more chilling content from the veteran of Castle Rock, the film adaptation of Nosferatu is set to be released on Christmas Day, December 25 in 2024. Who needs holiday joy when there’s a vampiric horror movie on the horizon instead?
