As a long-time admirer of Billy Bob Thornton‘s captivating acting prowess, it’s always a delight to see him recognized for his exceptional work. His nonchalant response to receiving a Golden Globe nomination is yet another testament to his humility and down-to-earth demeanor.
For a moment, Billy Bob Thornton thought there was serious trouble.
The actor claims he was soundly asleep when his publicist phoned him at 5:16 in the morning on Monday, delivering the news that he’d been nominated for a Golden Globe.
The actor known as ‘Landman’ admitted feeling startled whenever someone phones him during the late hours, stating, ‘I instantly assume something’s wrong. It reminds me of a baseball pitcher with a no-hitter game; people avoid talking to them for fear of disrupting their focus. The same happens to me – my colleagues never inform me about ongoing situations. So, when I received that call, I was concerned, but then relieved to learn everyone was safe and flattered by the Golden Globe committee’s consideration.’
In the current first season of the Paramount+ TV drama series, Thornton was selected for the ‘Best Actor’ award in a TV drama category. This recognition came due to his gripping portrayal of a hard-nosed oil company troubleshooter. Previously, he had bagged the ‘Best Actor’ Golden Globe in 2015 for his chilling performance during the debut season of FX’s “Fargo”.
It’s noticeable that actors often claim they didn’t watch the ceremony where awards are given at the Globes, but in Thornton’s case, it appears genuine. He doesn’t seem like someone who would get overly excited about such things – as he put it, “You can’t really get worked up about stuff, you understand?” He seems to take things as they come.
In the TV series “Landman,” created by Taylor Sheridan, the character Tommy Norris, played by Thomasin McKenzie, delivers many humorous lines. When asked about his preferred one, Thornton says, “There are quite a few that I adore, but it appears ‘I stopped drinking, I’ll just stick to beer’ is a favorite among fans.
Regarding a potential second season for the drama, the actor is optimistic about its chances, believing that his nomination could influence Paramount+’s decision in that direction.
Thornton commented that given the success of the show, another season seems likely. He added that receiving a nomination boosts visibility for a series, which could be a factor in their decision. He can’t fathom why they wouldn’t continue it. He expects an announcement soon, as if they plan to produce another one, they’ll need to start working on it not long after the New Year.
On Sunday, January 5th, 2025, at 5 p.m. Pacific Time or 8 p.m. Eastern Time, the 82nd Golden Globe Awards will be broadcast live from The Beverly Hilton and can be streamed on Paramount+, airing on CBS.
The production company behind the Golden Globes, Dick Clark Productions, is co-owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge. This same group also owns The Hollywood Reporter.
