At the Liberty Ball following the inauguration on Monday evening, Billy Ray Cyrus delivered a disorganized, technically flawed show.
In the 90’s, a renowned figure of country music joined for a live rendition of Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” a track that originally featured him along with Miley Cyrus. During this performance in Washington D.C., his performance was somewhat drowned out as the song’s music video played loudly on a large screen behind him.
In 2019, “Old Town Road” broke the record for the longest-running No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100, holding the top spot for an impressive 19 weeks. As the music video concluded, Miley Cyrus took over with a gravelly voice and conversational delivery. At one point, she encouraged the audience to join in as she galloped across the stage, microphone in hand.
Everyone, feel free to clap your hands now. If you show me support, I’ll continue performing. They advised me to pass the time as much as possible,” Cyrus then declared, turning away from the audience. He then inquired if anyone knew the lyrics to “Achy Breaky Heart,” while adjusting his electric guitar and grumbling about it not being connected to the sound system.
He called out, “Is my guitar still plugged in? I can’t seem to hear it anymore.” Pausing, he wondered, “Is anyone else awake here? I don’t seem to hear anything. Can you all hear this? Is there someone at the back? Could someone please turn on my guitar again? We have a bit more singing to do,” Cyrus requested from the technical crew behind the stage.
He asked the crowd, “Should I keep performing or should I leave? I don’t mind either way,” he casually mentioned to the stagehands, who remained silent. A technician then emerged to fix the country singer’s electric guitar within the sound system, and Cyrus pondered if the instrument had been accidentally unplugged by the tech himself.
While trying to sort out the issue up on stage, I found myself standing there in silence, appreciating Carrie Underwood’s performance earlier. She’d faced technical difficulties too, just like me when my game freezes unexpectedly. On Monday, during the inauguration of President Donald Trump, she was compelled to sing a cappella due to audio malfunctions – similar to when my microphone cuts out mid-stream in an online gaming session.
When it seemed like the guitar couldn’t be made functional with the sound system, Cyrus informed the technician, “I suppose it’s not working then.” He subsequently encouraged the crowd to clap their hands as Cyrus tried an a cappella version of “Achy Breaky Heart,” by speaking and singing intermittently.
As a gamer, I’d put it this way:
“Well, my show didn’t last too long before the crowd was sent off to dreamland, and I was escorted backstage. The Hollywood Reporter tried to get a statement from my team, but they haven’t replied yet.
