Binny And Family Review: Anjini Dhawan and Pankaj Kapur led family-drama wins you over with its deft writing and broad messaging

Plot:

As a third-culture kid who grew up straddling two cultures, I found Binny And Family to be an incredibly relatable tale of cultural clashes within families. Having experienced my own fair share of grandparents barging into my privacy and personal space during visits, this film struck a chord with me.

Binny (Anjini Dhawan) resides with her family in the United Kingdom. Having been brought up in a loving household with thoughtful parents, Binny’s life takes an unexpected turn when her Indian grandparents decide to visit, unintentionally disrupting her privacy and personal space in the process.

Will Binny adapt to the new routine, or will she struggle with it? Does Binny ultimately develop empathy for her grandparents by the story’s conclusion? How does Binny’s journey turn out in the end? Tune into Binny And Family to discover the answers.

What Works for Binny And Family:

Binny and the Family” is a skillfully crafted family drama, particularly shining in its second half as it delves into the intriguing relationship between Binny and her grandfather. The movie is thoughtfully constructed, avoiding heavy-handed messaging by steering clear of overt preaching. Instead, it subtly conveys its themes without resorting to melodrama, making it both moving and impactful.

As an ardent admirer, I must say that “Binny And Family” truly resonates on numerous personal levels, striking chords deep within. Anjini Dhawan and Pankaj Kapur‘s scenes in this cinematic journey, especially during the second half, are undeniably its most captivating aspects. The heartfelt life lessons imparted by Pankaj Kapoor’s character on a bench, under the star-studded UK sky, late one chilly night, leave an indelible mark. Naman Tripathy, portraying Binny’s friend, brings vibrancy and warmth to the narrative with his lively demeanor. The melodious music in this movie is nothing short of therapeutic, while the final song is a poignant masterpiece that leaves one emotionally drained.

What Doesn’t Work for Binny And Family:

The first half of “Binny and Family” follows a consistent, familiar pattern. However, it’s in the second half where the movie picks up pace and delves into more profound and impactful issues. Unfortunately, the film seems longer than necessary, with approximately 20-25 minutes that could be cut to make a stronger impact. The story could have provided a deeper exploration of Binny’s psychological makeup, explaining why she acts as a rebellious teenager for much of the movie.

A significant portion of the movie is in English, so viewers should be ready for that. This isn’t a critique, but something to consider, as unlike The Buckingham Murders which offered both Hindi and Hinglish versions, Binny And Family only has an English version available.
