As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must admit that the latest Black Ops 6 Zombies update has left me somewhat disheartened. Having grown up with the thrill of the Pack-a-Punch machine, it’s like Treyarch has snatched away a piece of my gaming childhood.
Thus far, it appears that the Black Ops 6 Zombies adventure will deliver most, if not all, of what fans have eagerly anticipated. Almost, but not quite.
As a long-time fan of Call of Duty: Zombies, I am thrilled to see a full year of round-based gameplay returning! The return of Edward Richtofen as the cunning puppet master adds an extra layer of excitement to the game, and I can’t wait to see what devious plans he has in store for us this time around.
However, players have already found a flaw in the changes to the Pack-a-Punch machine.
Zombies fans take issue with ‘soulless’ Pack-a-Punch machine in Black Ops 6
Among the iconic elements of Call of Duty Zombies, the Pack-a-punch machine stands out as equally legendary and may even overshadow the game mode itself due to its namesake becoming a popular way to refer to any substantial improvement or upgrade.
However, in Black Ops 6, players are expressing their disappointment, stating that the weapon upgrade machine feels devoid of spirit due to the developers’ decision to eliminate the apprehension and thrill associated with acquiring a tier-two weapon.
In the game Terminus, the Pack-a-Punch machine is consistently located on the map’s layout. Unlike in past editions, Treyarch has eliminated any “waiting periods for upgrades,” allowing players to quickly insert their weapons and receive them back almost immediately, eliminating the need for careful time management when waiting for the weapon’s return.
Players are likely to recall Kino Der Toten, a game that often led to disagreements among friends over who got to operate the machine quickly to gather sufficient upgrades before the 30-second teleportation timer expired.
Already, players have taken to social media to claim that “Zombies is cooked” and has become a “Warzone-ified slop” after seeing the machine in action.
As a longtime fan of Call of Duty’s Zombies mode, I can’t help but feel disappointed with the latest iteration in Black Ops Cold War (BOCW). It seems that Treyarch has lost touch with what made Zombies great in the first place.

“One fan remarked, ‘Every time I pack, I miss that song! The place feels so bare without it,'” and a different fan said, “‘I hope they don’t remove any more features while preserving the original gameplay.'”
People noted that the top Zombie maps ever made feature an assigned “Upgrade Station” area, which essentially provides players with a moment to pause and enhance their weapons.
Among numerous maps, five standouts like Kino, Forsaken, Moon, and Mob of the Dead are particularly renowned for their focus on reaching the Pack-a-Punch machine. These maps have earned a reputation as some of the most successful ever created.
In the upcoming Black Ops 6, you’ll find an enhancement in the number of robust Zombie characteristics to infuse it with more life and personality. This includes elements like GobbleGums, though it seems that the Pack-a-Punch machine may serve more as a fun novelty than a profitable sideline this year.
