Blackview Mega 8 review – “A powerful tablet in a budget”

Tech company Blackview, known for developing tablets, phones, and mini-PCs, has recently launched its latest creation – the Mega 8 tablet. This device was developed in partnership with Google Gemini AI 2.0 and is designed primarily for content creators. However, being a creative powerhouse isn’t the only thing this tablet can do; I wanted to explore its gaming capabilities as well. To my surprise, although the Mega 8 may not have been specifically designed for gamers, it performs exceptionally well in running most games smoothly.

Unboxing the Blackview Mega 8

Available in black, blue and green, this new tablet comes in a pretty standard white cardboard box, inside which you’ll find the Mega 8, USB-C charging cord, a European AC adapter, and a stylus. If you’re outside of Europe, don’t fret about the AC adapter; the cord can easily be plugged into North American-style AC adapters.
You’ll notice speakers on the top edge of the tablet, power and volume buttons on the right side, and a USB-C port on the bottom edge. As a bonus, the device comes with a trifold case already on it, the back of which is translucent. It also pairs easily with your mobile controller via Bluetooth, which is always a plus.

Much like bigger iPad Pro models, the Meg 8 boasts a 13-inch display, making it an appealing upgrade for those accustomed to standard iPads, such as my 10th-generation iPad with its 10.9-inch screen. Frankly, it’s the substantial screen size that sparked my curiosity and prompted me to give this device a spin.

The Blackview Mega 8 Impresses with a 13-inch Screen

The Mega 8’s oversized Full High Definition+ screen really heightens the level of immersion you’ll experience playing your favourite games. While it may not sound like much, the extra few inches make a huge difference. Whether in doing laps around the competition in Asphalt Legends or Disney SpeedStorm or battling foes, ghouls, and vampires in Vampires Fall 2, the extra-wide 1080p screen gives you that bit of extra detail that enhances your experience.

On this AI-enhanced tablet, even PC games deliver an impressive visual and tactile experience. During gameplay of Chernobylite and Cyberpunk 2077, I noticed no significant drop in quality compared to what I saw on my laptop monitor. This tablet offers ample space with a 512GB ROM for you to store all your preferred shooters, role-playing games, and platformers. Plus, the SD card slot allows for additional storage expansion up to 2 TB. Lastly, it boasts a swift 90Hz refresh rate, eliminating any lag concerns.

Kingsroad, I observed occasional black flashes during cutscenes with the snowy backdrop. Additionally, battles in Love and Deepspace appear somewhat less crisp compared to my iPad 10th generation.

The Blackview Mega 8 was Built For Creators

While my primary objective was to assess the Mega 8’s gaming capabilities, one has to appreciate how smoothly it operates apps like Photoshop Express Photo Editor, Adobe XD, and Adobe Capture, thanks in part to its 36GB of RAM and 2.2GHz Octa-core Unisoc Tiger T620 processor.

On mobile devices, Adobe software might not be as intricate as its desktop counterparts, but they’re no less demanding applications. It’s quite impressive to have the ability to edit and create images effortlessly while on the move. Additionally, you can snap stunning 50MP photos with a Sony camera. Moreover, the main camera allows for capturing high-definition 1080p videos as well.

The Blackview Mega 8 comes equipped with an impressive 11,000mAh battery, according to the developers, this battery life lasts up to 18 hours on video calls via Zoom. Although I’m quite introverted and haven’t tested this claim myself, I did observe that it allows for extended periods of streaming Netflix and gaming without requiring a recharge.

The Mega 8 will Suit Most Gamers’ Needs

Blackview hit it out of the park with this one. While you may see some lag or graphical issues with severely demanding games like Love and Deepspace, the Mega 8 runs most titles without issue.

With its 13-inch display providing sharp and vivid visuals for any game you play, and audio that’s clear and seamless, the Blackview Mega 8 appears to be an excellent value at $349.99. If you’re seeking a cost-effective option compared to the iPad Pro, the Mega 8 is definitely worth considering due to its impressive battery life and expandable storage up to 2TB.
