Following its initial broadcast of three seasons in 2010 and 2011 on Spike TV, the college football comedy “Blue Mountain State” is preparing for a fourth chapter on Amazon Prime. Created by Eric Falconer and Chris Romano, this series starred Alan Ritchson, formerly an “American Idol” contestant, as team captain and standout linebacker Kevin “Thad” Castle. He was joined by Darin Brooks as the hard-living quarterback Alex Moran, Ed Marinaro as Coach Marty Daniels, and Chris Romano, now known as Romanski, who played Sammy Cacciatore, a close friend of Alex’s from high school who donned the team mascot costume, a mountain goat named Billy, in all 39 episodes.
Blue Mountain State, a fictional college, takes inspiration from the University of Miami and Boise State University, with Boise State’s vibrant blue and orange colors and mountainous backdrop mirroring those of BMS. According to reports, characters Romanski, Brooks, and Falconer will reappear in the upcoming fourth season of the Lionsgate-produced TV series. This new season is expected to continue the storylines from the first three seasons and a 2016 crowdfunded film titled “Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland.
Since 2022, Alan Ritchson has been starring in the popular crime/mystery drama “Reacher” on Amazon Prime. This role was hard-earned, and his efforts were rewarded with a first-look deal from Amazon that gave him an executive producer credit for the upcoming season of “Blue Mountain State,” as well as a return to his lead role. Ritchson himself announced the forthcoming fourth season of “Blue Mountain State” at the Daytona 500 in February. In a video shared by Zach Maskavich of WESH Orlando, Ritchson stated, “[Playing Thad is] probably the most fun I’ve ever had … We are currently working with Amazon to make the fourth season a reality.
Darin Brooks and Romanski will rejoin Ritchson for Season 4
In simpler terms, Alan Ritchson is excited about the idea of bringing back the series since he finds it incredibly amusing and relevant to modern times. He points out how they cleverly revive the characters to fit into today’s world. With so many new elements to explore, he believes that fans will be pleasantly surprised by how Thad, among others, adapts to these changes. In essence, he thinks it will be a delightful experience for everyone involved.
The initial storyline centered around Thad, Alex Moran (played by Darin Brooks), who was both high-risk and high-reward as a signal-caller; Sammy, a determined but awkward character; and Craig Shilo, the standout running back (portrayed by Sam Jones III). For Season 4, it appears that both Brooks and Romanski will reprise their roles as Alex and Sammy. As for Jones’ return, there hasn’t been any official confirmation from Amazon or the show creators yet. However, Jones hinted at his possible involvement in the upcoming season by sharing a post about Alan Ritchson’s comments at Daytona on his Instagram reels in February, using the hashtags #GoGoats and #Season 4.
It’s been pointed out that Ritchson underwent a significant physical change to play Jack Reacher, making him larger and more muscular than his previous role as Thad Castle. Consequently, writers will need to adjust his character in future episodes since the storyline depicted Thad feigning death after losing his NFL contract. Given that he was a former professional athlete, it’s unlikely we’ll see Ritchson back on the field with the Billy Goats for Season 4 and beyond.
The film’s Kickstarter raised almost $2 million
The movie depicting Thad’s swift decline from fame wouldn’t have been produced without the backing of fans of the series. Eric Falconer initiated a Kickstarter fundraising campaign for the “Blue Mountain State” sequel film, gathering an impressive $1,911,827 from approximately 24,000 donors—far surpassing his $1.5 million target. In return for their contributions, backers received various perks ranging from a digital copy of the script and some exclusive X-related favors for a $10 pledge to merchandise, VIP packages, tickets to the premiere, or access to the afterparty for larger amounts. Ten donors contributed $10,000 each to secure a minor role in the movie, while significant contributors received various signed memorabilia, premiere tickets, or entrance to the premiere afterparty.
Although the Kickstarter campaign for the film received strong backing, it currently has a 46% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, significantly lower than the 84% enjoyed by the first three seasons of “Blue Mountain State”. It remains uncertain where in the storyline Season 4 will continue, but the Jay Chandrasekhar-directed movie portrayed the demolition of the iconic Goat House and substantial harm to the reputations of Thad, Sammy, and Alex. Historically resilient college athletes might find themselves in a redemption arc for the Mountain Goats in Season 4.
