Blue Mountain State Sequel Series With Reacher’s Alan Ritchson Happening

In the early 2010s, a college football comedy series titled “Blue Mountain State” aired on Spike TV for three seasons, with Alan Ritchson from “Reacher” portraying linebacker Thad Castle. The show gained a dedicated fanbase when it became available on Netflix, and in February 2024, the news broke that Lionsgate Television would produce a fourth season of the series. Now, there are rumors suggesting that Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video might soon give their approval for the series to proceed. This information comes from Deadline.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, let me share my thoughts about a captivating series I once watched. Known as “Blue Mountain State,” it revolved around a fictitious Midwest college, the titular Blue Mountain State, and its formidable football team, the Mountain Goats. The narrative focused on the primary and secondary quarterbacks – the self-absorbed Radon (played by Page Kennedy) and Alex (portrayed by Brooks), who’d rather party as the backup and pal around with the mascot (Romano).

The show’s protagonist was Thad, portrayed by Ritchson, a team captain who was passionate about football and hazing newcomers, to put it mildly. This comedic gem embodied all the quintessential elements of a Spike TV production – college football, booze, parties, sex, and hazing. It’s worth noting that audiences on Rotten Tomatoes have given it an impressive 89% positive rating, although it lacks any critical appraisal to date.

Last year, Amazon MGM Studios swiftly acquired the rights for the new season, and it is anticipated that co-creators Romano and Eric Falconer will reprise their roles. Given the massive success of Reacher on Prime Video, the series is being expedited, and they are making arrangements with Ritchson and his team to accommodate Blue Mountain State (BMS) within his busy timetable, aiming for an official go-ahead.

Ritchson was at the Daytona 500 over the weekend and had this to say:

We’re arranging it through Amazon for a fourth season. I’m attempting to fit it into my timetable, and I genuinely believe this will be the best season of BMS yet. It’s absolutely hilarious, and the way we revive the characters to adapt to current times is spot-on perfect.

There was a ‘Blue Mountain State’ Movie

It’s not the first occasion that “Blue Mountain State” has been given a follow-up project. Back in 2014, Ritchson and the producers initiated a Kickstarter campaign to fund a movie. Subsequently, they managed to raise $1.5 million, and the film, titled “Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland“, was released on February 2, 2016. Written by Ritchson, Falconer, and Romano, the story revolves around college senior Alex who organizes a massive party in an attempt to persuade Thad, now playing in the NFL, to buy the Goat House before the Dean can close it down.

The movie closely resembled the format of the TV series, filled with continuous parties, nudity, heavy drinking, and more. To prevent an NC-17 rating, it had to be cut back significantly. Currently, it holds a dismal 46% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes without any critical ratings. The film was released on Netflix on March 1, 2016.

As for its performance at the box office, it’s important to note that there isn’t a great deal of information available on this topic. Primarily, Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland might be best known for being a highly successful Kickstarter campaign to bring the movie adaptation of a popular cult TV show to life.
