To some degree, “Blue Sun Palace ” achieves this, but its storyline and characters seem more tools for setting the tone, as Constance Tsang’s directorial debut in feature films delves into the theme of grief within Queens’ Chinese community. The movie initially concentrates on Didi (Xu Haipeng) and Cheung (Lee Kang-sheng), whose blossoming romance is gradually becoming more significant. The opening quarter of the film centers around their relationship, along with Didi’s work and friendships at a massage parlor.

In the heart of the narrative, about half an hour in, a devastating turn occurs with Didi’s untimely demise. This marked the start of the film’s core story, as her friend, Amy (Wu Ke-Xi), found herself three weeks later, grappling with grief. Interestingly, it was our shared sorrow that drew me closer to Cheung. As we navigated the somber seas of mourning, our bond deepened.
