Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

Summary

  • Some Bluey episodes were edited or banned for controversial content, like toilet humor or inappropriate phrases.
  • Censorship has relaxed over the years, with initially skipped episodes later released due to fan feedback.
  • Even scenes like a character farting or a pony defecating caused issues, resulting in edits for certain releases.

As a long-time fan of children’s entertainment and a parent myself, I must say that Bluey has become one of my family’s favorite shows. It’s not just the colorful animation or catchy songs that grab us, but the heartwarming stories and relatable moments that make each episode special.

Bluey has become incredibly popular, yet the show’s content may vary based on viewing location and time. Some episodes contain material that sparked controversy in other countries. Occasionally, explicit humor related to bathroom humor needed to be removed or a character’s line with potentially offensive content had to be re-voiced. In certain instances, entire scenes were even remade to accommodate these changes.

To be honest, certain episodes were entirely prohibited because of their explicit content. On some occasions, edited versions of these episodes were released for home viewing. Interestingly, it’s worth mentioning that as time has passed, the censorship of the series has become less stringent, and previously omitted episodes have found their way into circulation. Naturally, fans worldwide have occasionally been able to access various versions of the show’s episodes, thanks to platforms like YouTube.

15 “Family Meeting”

Season 3, Episode 23

The gathering among the Heeler family commences with a debate over whether Bandit passed gas near Bluey, which they humorously term as “fluffing.” To resolve this issue, Chilli proposes a sort of family tribunal where everyone can voice their perspective. In an imaginative role-play scenario, Bluey employs toys and dolls, with a toy skunk standing in for her father, to narrate the story. Bandit persists that he didn’t “fluff” on anyone, maintaining it’s not something he would do, but others remind him of past instances where this has happened.

“‘Cause You’re the King of Fluffies!”

Ultimately, it was discovered that Bandit and Bluey both made mistakes, and even Chilli wasn’t immune to getting into trouble. Yet, the story’s inclusion of bathroom humor stirred up disagreement, leading some countries where Disney distributes the series to skip the episode, as well as initially withholding it from Disney+. However, when viewers highlighted that other episodes featuring characters passing gas remained unedited, Disney eventually decided to air it.

14 “Fruitbat”

Season 1, Episode 8

In the animated series “Fruitbat,” bedtime becomes a playful struggle for Bluey and Bingo, as they resist going to bed, finding it more intriguing that fruitbats are active at night. Bandit attempts to guide them into bedtime routine using different activities. Although Bingo grows weary, Bluey finds it difficult to fall asleep. However, when she sees her father napping on the floor, she gains a newfound appreciation for his tireless efforts in caring for his daughters.

There Was Concern Over the Penguins Game

Bandit creates an assortment of games for the girls that help them enjoy their bedtime rituals. To persuade Bluey to bathe, he tricks her into mimicking a penguin by sliding on the floor. Unfortunately, this part was cut from the episode shown on CBeebies in the U.K., as there were worries that kids might get hurt if they attempted to replicate it.

13 “Markets”

Season 1, Episode 20

“Markets” find Bluey receiving five dollars from the Tooth Fairy, which she intends to use during a shopping trip with her father and sister. Upon encountering her friend Indy, she contemplates purchasing something they could mutually appreciate. However, this proves challenging as they have different tastes. For instance, Indy can’t consume many of the food items Bluey considers buying.

Don’t Stand Behind Buttermilk

At the local market, two ponies adorned as a unicorn and Pegasus catch the eyes of some young girls. They are thrilled by this sight, yet only one girl named Bluey possesses enough money to ride one. Opting not to take a ride, she instead strokes the “unicorn” pony, complimenting its beauty. To their dismay, the unresponsive pony relieves itself in front of them. This particular scene was initially edited out from early Disney productions but has reappeared in later versions.

In the television show “Pass the Parcel”, there was a problem when the pony and her handler were featured. Previously, Buttermilk was shown near a heap of waste, but this scene was removed from the Disney version.

12 “Teasing”

Season 1, Episode 48

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

Titled “Teasing,” this episode explores the Heelers engaging in a chat about playfully tormenting each other. This spans from Bluey keeping her sister’s toothbrush away to Bandit falsely accusing the kids of his farts. Ultimately, Bandit discerns that there’s a distinction between teasing and playing; however, Bingo manipulates a “Volume Control” game and silences him before he can clarify what exactly that difference is.

“Flat Pack” Was Edited for Similar Reasons

In a turn of events, the broadcast of the episode sparked controversy due to the term “ooga booga” being used, as it is perceived as having offensive racial undertones towards Indigenous Australians. For a while, the ABC in Australia took the episode off the air. Certain versions, like those distributed by Disney, swapped out the phrase with “Shooby-Doowah.” The episode “Flat Pack” faced a similar predicament, as it too included the controversial term. In response, it was temporarily removed from broadcasts, and some variations replaced the line with “Ooh Ooh.”

11 “Daddy Putdown”

Season 1, Episode 51

At the baby shower, Chilli leaves Bluey and Bingo under Bandit’s care to sleep, making him solely responsible for putting them to bed. Despite this arrangement, Bluey feels uneasy without her mother and requests that Chilli come home. She expresses concern that she might not feel Chilli’s goodnight kiss when she returns because she will be asleep. However, it turns out that Bluey does indeed sense the affectionate touch when her mother returns to say goodnight.

“How Does the Baby Get In the Lady’s Belly?

In the show, there was a scene that sparked debate. During playtime, Bandit mistakenly believed a baby shower was about actual bathing. His daughters set him straight. As the conversation turned to babies, Bingo inquired about the process of babies entering mothers’ bodies. To dodge the question, Bandit opted to spin Bingo on a swing instead. It’s likely that this line was removed from Disney+ for fear of children repeating the query to their parents.

10 “Trains”

Season 2, Episode 15

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

In the Heeler household, the newest game is called “Trains.” Bandit acts as if he’s driving a pretend train by pushing a chair around. Bingo utilizes this imaginary locomotive to transport her doll to Chilli’s make-believe daycare and heads off to work, where she pretends to be a veterinarian. On the other hand, Bluey enjoys being a rowdy passenger on the train, often breaking its imaginary rules.

Bluey’s Ticket Wasn’t Originally a Slug

In one scene, Bluey is instructed by Bandit to reveal an imaginary ticket. True to her mischievous nature, she playfully suggests that her father should lick and smear it, then jokes, “This isn’t a train pass; it’s a blob of goo!” The original dialogue had Bluey stating that the “ticket” was actually slime, but Disney modified it to avoid certain connotations. As a result, Bandit’s line about licking poo was removed from the final version, and the scene was reshot accordingly.

9 “Perfect”

Season 3, Episode 1

On Father’s Day in “Perfect,” sweet Bluey is determined to find the ideal card for Bandit. However, her own high standards make it hard for her to be content with what she produces, always striving for perfection. It later becomes clear that Chilli unknowingly damaged Bluey’s self-assurance when she placed a “perfect” drawing Bingo had made over one of Bluey’s on the fridge, not realizing Bluey was watching at the time.

“I Even Got To Keep Them.”

In a flashback scene, Bandit discusses a potential dental operation (implied to be about his “dog teeth”) with a friend, hinting that Chilli prefers keeping her choices flexible. To make it clearer for younger audiences, Disney alters the conversation so that Bandit is actually talking about removing his teeth for safety reasons, suggesting they might come in handy if he needs to bite someone. Since the series features anthropomorphic canines, this modification fits seamlessly with the storyline and the animation is adjusted accordingly.

8 “Exercise”

Season 3, Episode 39

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

Bandit attempts to increase his physical activity through exercise, but Bingo and Bluey begin using his gear for their imaginative play. Over time, they manage to persuade him to join in their games instead, such as wrapping up Bingo in Bandit’s yoga mat like a sushi roll. Eventually, these games prove beneficial when Bandit visits the doctor and learns that his blood pressure is normal.

The Opening Ended Up Getting Cut

In the initial sequence, Bandit steps on a scale and exclaims, “Oh, no!” upon viewing his weight. This leads the girls to advise him to work out in order to slim down. Similarly, Chilli checks her own weight and expresses disappointment. Some broadcasts, including global versions, omitted this part due to worries that it could encourage unhealthy body perceptions. Removing the scene shortened the episode’s duration to approximately six minutes.

7 “Taxi”

Season 1, Episode 25

In the show “Taxi,” The Heelers adapt to a wet day by engaging in the titular game. Here, Bluey assumes the role of a driver, tasked with ensuring Bandit reaches the airport on time for a flight to Tasmania. However, Bandit is concerned about getting lost or picking up extra passengers, but that’s exactly what happens when Bingo hops aboard, pretending to be a wealthy woman. This situation marks the beginning of numerous fabricated delays orchestrated by Chilli and Bingo. Eventually, they decide to walk to the airport instead. Upon arriving, Bluey is revealed as the pilot, and poor Bandit discovers that Bingo was another passenger all along.

“Oh, Biscuits!”

Bingo, one of the characters, possesses a child-like doll that represents her daughter Millicent. During the narrative, Bingo simulates vomiting by Millicent onto Bandit, making their journey unpleasant, despite it being a pretend scenario. In the U.S. edition, these vomiting scenes were reduced; instead, the episode concludes with Bandit expressing annoyance by saying “Oh, biscuits!”

6 “Born Yesterday”

Season 3, Episode 6

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

In “Born Yesterday,” when Bluey and Bingo question why they should follow adults’ guidance, Chilli clarifies it’s due to adults having lived longer and accumulated more life experiences. This idea sparks a fresh game called “Born Yesterday” for Bandit: he plays the part of being newly born on Earth. As the girls attempt to educate him about the world, Bandit becomes unruly, yearning to explore numerous aspects simultaneously. Eventually, the two sisters understand their mother’s viewpoint but let Bandit venture out independently to learn from life.

Watch Out for That Swing

One scene that proved controversial was one where Bandit “discovers” a swing and gives Bingo a push. When he’s not looking, however, the swing hits him, likely in the groin. Initially, the brief scene was cut in Disney’s distribution of the episode, though it has appeared in later releases.

5 “Army”

Season 2, Episode 16

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

One of the more touching episodes in “Bluey” is often referred to as the one where “Army” is played. In this episode, we meet a new character named Jack, who is a student at Bluey’s school and becomes friends with Rusty. Together they engage in a game called “army.” However, Jack frets about his forgetfulness and ability to follow instructions, but Rusty convinces him that these very qualities make him perfect for the “army” game as it involves aspects Jack thinks he’s not good at.

Jack’s Self-Deprecation Was Slightly Toned Down

When Rusty inquires from Jack why he switched schools, Rusty assumes there might have been an issue at his previous school. However, Jack reveals his struggles by saying, “There’s something I’m dealing with,” mentioning the difficulties he encounters. In the Disney-edited episodes of this episode, the line was altered to “There’s something happening with me,” which seems to soften the idea that a child could be “wrong.”

4 “Mr Monkeyjocks”

Season 2, Episode 38

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

In the story “Mr. Monkeyjocks,” Bandit and Chilli feel the playroom is overrun with toys belonging to the girls, so they decide to give away those that seem less important to them. However, Bluey and Bingo consider all their toys as unique. Bandit then proposes a challenge: he wants the girls to demonstrate Mr. Monkeyjocks, their stuffed monkey, still holds significance for them. The girls agree, thereby giving more importance to Mr. Monkeyjocks compared to Bandit within their household. However, Bandit cleverly switches roles with Mr. Monkeyjocks’ butler and persuades the girls to serve him instead.

One Overly-Romantic Line Had to Be Changed

In the Disney version of the movie, some strong expressions were softened or changed. For instance, Bandit’s line “He’s gone crazy” was altered to “He’s gone bananas!” Similarly, Chilli’s reference to Mr Monkeyjocks as “lover boy” was rephrased as the more friendly and non-romantic “sweetheart.”

3 “Driving”

Season 3, Episode 20

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

In the scenario, Bluey is eager to engage in a driving game with her mom, but Mommy Chilli is preoccupied preparing dinner. Despite this, she takes a moment to join in. While playing, Mommy Chilli suggests that having a specific goal while playing would make the game more enjoyable for Bluey.

Sometimes a Cat Uses Her Claws

In the game she plays, Bluey needs to fetch almond milk for her feline friend, “Agatha,” who she imagines as a tea party companion. If Bluey doesn’t return with the milk on time, Agatha warns that she might damage the curtains. In certain versions, such as those distributed by Disney, the threat is that Agatha will claw at the curtains instead, reducing the explicit bathroom humor.

2 “Smoochy Kiss”

Season 3, Episode 35

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

In this situation, character named Chilli is trying to correct some of Bandit’s unwanted behaviors, which makes their daughters feel that Chilli doesn’t deserve a loving kiss from Bandit. As a result, the girls choose to keep Bandit separate from Chilli. Later on, when they spend time alone with Bandit, they observe his habits and come to understand that their mother was right in some aspects.

“You Gotta Take the Good With the Bad”

One of Bandit’s less-than-desirable quirks is his frequent passing of gas, which isn’t often shown on screen. Much like in “Family Meeting,” these gas emissions are humorously called “fluffies.” Just as the previous episode, this one was initially withheld from both Disney Channel and Disney+. However, this decision was later reversed, making it the first episode of the second half of the third season to air in the U.S. Interestingly, this episode is often shown alongside “Family Meeting.”

1 “Dad Baby”

Season 2, Episode 13

Bluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright BannedBluey Episodes That Were Censored or Outright Banned

In the episode titled “Dad Baby,” Bingo rediscovers an old baby carrier. This sparks a creative role-playing activity where Bandit wears the carrier and acts as if he’s pregnant with Bingo. Bandit assumes this game will be simple, but soon realizes it’s not. He considers quitting, but Bluey persuades him to continue, reminding him of his promise to do things right when they start something new. Eventually, Bandit “delivers” Baby Bingo, even enlisting Lucky’s father for assistance during the delivery process.

It Eventually Popped Up On YouTube

Gazing into the eyes of the newborn Bingo seems to make everything worthwhile, yet some viewers in the U.S. missed out on this episode due to the sensitive topics of childbirth or male pregnancy being deemed unsuitable for broadcast there. However, the episode can be streamed through the official YouTube channel of Bluey, but not on Disney+.
