Blumhouse to Adapt Horror Game ‘Phasmophobia’ into a Movie!

Blumhouse Productions, a significant player within the horror genre, held its inaugural “The Business of Fear” event in Hollywood, California. Notable attendees included Jason Blum, CEO of Blumhouse, James Wan, CEO of Atomic Monster, and Stephen Follows, a prominent author specializing in horror. The gathering aimed to explore the growth of horror across different sub-genres over recent years, and also served as a platform for Blumhouse to reveal their plans to adapt one of the most popular paranormal first-person horror games that has emerged in recent times.

According to recent updates, Blumhouse Productions is progressing with a horror film based on the game “Phasmophobia.” As of now, there are no named writers or directors for the project, but it will be produced by both Blumhouse and Wan’s Atomic Monster, along with Kinetic Games Limited – the developers of the widely-played game that debuted in 2020. This development is exciting news for fans, as the game has garnered immense popularity since its initial release. Notably, Blumhouse is also gearing up to unveil the long-awaited sequel to “Five Nights of Freddy’s” later this year – another testament to their knack for video game adaptations.

What Is ‘Phasmophobia’?

In the role of an intrepid paranormal explorer, I join forces with three companions in a chilling, online cooperative adventure known as Phasmophobia. Our mission is to delve into haunted locales teeming with supernatural phenomena, amassing as much proof of these eerie occurrences as we can. Armed with our ghost-hunting arsenal, we search diligently for signs and recordings of the paranormal, which we later sell to a team dedicated to banishing these spectral beings.

For multiple weeks between October and November 2020, Phasmophobia held the title of the top-selling game worldwide on Stream. Since its debut, this game has sold over 23 million copies globally, making a significant impact in the multiplayer horror genre. Critics’ reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, with many declaring it as one of the finest ghost games ever produced. Initially released on Microsoft Windows, Phasmophobia is now playable on Playstation 5, Playstation VR2, and Xbox Series platforms, where it has continued to thrive.

After a survey conducted in 2024, Blumhouse expressed interest in producing content similar to Phasmophobia. In this survey, they categorized 100 horror films from the past 50 years into various sub-genres. The results showed that the paranormal was one of the most successful sub-genres, with other viable options being slasher, survival, and psychological thrillers. It seems that Blumhouse is focusing on producing specific types of horror films to better appeal to their audience in the future.
