Boop! The Musical will play its final Broadway performance on July 13.
The latest announcement marks the fourth fresh Broadway musical in a few weeks, joining the ranks of “Smash,” “Dead Outlaw,” and “Real Women Have Curves.” These new productions debuted this spring, aiming to garner recognition from the Tony Awards, but unfortunately, they left empty-handed.
This year, actress Jasmine Amy Rogers from the ‘Boop’ musical was recognized with a Tony Award nomination, while the production itself earned nominations in categories such as best costume design and best choreography.
The Jerry Mitchell-directed and choreographed musical made its debut at the Broadhurst Theater on April 5, following preview performances that began on March 11.
The production garnered a range of favorable to enthusiastic critiques due to its innovative portrayal of a cartoon character brought to life in contemporary New York City. Notably, Rogers was commended for her exceptional performance, earning her the Drama Desk Award for outstanding lead actress – an honor she shared with Audra McDonald from the play “Gypsy”.
For several weeks now, the capacity at Boop! has remained between 70% and 80%, failing to surpass $1 million in weekly earnings. Last week, the show managed around $600,000, but this figure has dipped as low as approximately $400,000. The rising costs associated with Broadway musicals have intensified the need for audience attendance, contributing to a string of recent closures. Similarly, Cabaret recently announced its intention to close after around 14 months on Broadway.
Furthermore, the musical “Boop” didn’t make an appearance at the Tony Awards, unlike its contemporary shows. Consequently, it missed out on the promotional advantages that such events often provide.
The musical features a score by David Foster and Susan Birkenhead and a book by Bob Martin.
In addition to its main characters, the cast of “Boop!” features Faith Prince portraying Valentina, Ainsley Melham as Dwayne, Erich Bergen playing Raymond Demarest, Stephen DeRosa in the role of Grampy, Anastacia McCleskey as Carol Evans, Angelica Hale as Trisha, Phillip Huber voicing Pudgy the Dog, Aubie Merrylees as Oscar Delacorte, and Ricky Schroeder appearing as Clarence.
