Borderlands 4 Director Says Game will Dial Back on Meme References

As someone who has been a dedicated fan of the Borderlands series since its inception, I must say that the upcoming release of Borderlands 4 has me both excited and a little apprehensive. While the memes and pop culture references have always been a fun aspect of the game, hearing that they will be toned down for the next title leaves me with mixed feelings.

Previously, the latest installment of the “Borderlands” series didn’t generate much excitement. Now, Gearbox Studios is preparing for the launch of the upcoming mainline game, titled “Borderlands 4“.

Despite previous games featuring references to current events and hidden memes, narrative director Sam Winkler has mentioned that they intend to reduce the use of memes in their upcoming title.

Less Memes in Borderlands 4

In a recent tweet, Winkler discussed Borderlands 3 and shared his thoughts on the abundance of bathroom humor in the game. When a fan inquired about the type of humor that might be found in the upcoming sequel, Winkler responded:

Despite being set in a post-apocalyptic universe, Borderlands maintains a humorous tone throughout the gameplay, often incorporating easter eggs and topical memes. These can be seen as names of items or even missions that reference elements beyond the Borderlands franchise.

In the epic world of Borderlands, I’ve wielded some pretty cool gear, and one that stands out is the ‘Veruca Assault Rifle.’ It’s a tribute to Veruca Salt from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, can you believe it?

As a passionate gaming enthusiast, I can attest that it’s not only mainstream films where references are tucked away. In fact, the iconic game Borderlands 2 even managed to sneak in an Easter Egg referencing the Double Rainbow meme – a viral sensation that emerged two years prior to its release!

Humor in Borderlands 4

Although you might notice fewer meme references in the upcoming “Borderlands” game, there’s a chance that it could still include some hidden surprises or Easter Eggs.

Many enthusiasts often find that the incorporation of references is what makes the game, “Borderlands“, even more endearing, and it brings a sense of delight when someone manages to grasp a reference within any given content they engage with.

Instead of ‘Hawk Tuah’ and ‘Skibidi Toilet’, a possible reference from the list of 2024 memes might be ‘Moo Deng’ or ‘Brat Summer’. Here’s an NPC idea: A character that only says, “Very demure, very mindful.” This could potentially become a popular meme.

Gearbox Needs a W

Currently, the Borderlands series appears to be experiencing a lull following the somewhat lackluster response to Borderlands 3 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The creators are eagerly anticipating a major success.

The movie adaptation didn’t fare well at the box office, despite having stars like Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, and Jack Black. Many felt that the film would have been more successful if it had been released a decade ago, or perhaps if they had chosen newer actors to play the roles instead.

It remains uncertain if Borderlands 4 will revive the series from its slump, but it’s great that Gearbox is eager to take on the challenge. With the unveiling at The Game Awards, there’s a chance we might see another major trailer in March. Here’s hoping that along with this, Gearbox announces a release date as well.

The upcoming video game, “Borderlands 4,” doesn’t have a confirmed launch date as of now, but it’s anticipated to hit stores on the latest gaming platforms such as the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and personal computers sometime in the coming year.
