In a victory for Gerard Butler and Lionsgate, the heist movie “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” led the U.S. box office, earning an unexpected $15.5 million during its debut over the second complete weekend in 2025.
Tucker Tooley’s action-packed movie, filled with testosterone, became the top-grossing film from Lionsgate over the past few months. Interestingly, its box office earnings matched those of the initial release of “Den of Thieves” in 2018.
Or, more concisely:
Tucker Tooley’s testosterone-infused movie, released by Lionsgate, was the highest-grossing film for months. It made about as much money as the first “Den of Thieves” movie in 2018.
Despite the significant wildfires that have swept through various parts of Greater Los Angeles, it seems that people’s enthusiasm for going to the movies hasn’t waned, based on reports from studio distribution sources keeping track of the situation. As of Friday, only a handful of smaller theaters had been shut down; the majority of these were located in the Altadena-Pasadena region.
Over the weekend, it was the Robbie Williams’ biopic Better Man, distributed by Paramount, that suffered a significant blow at the box office. The movie debuted in 13th position and grossed just $1.1 million from a total of 1,291 theaters.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the phenomenal success of the multiple Golden Globe winner, “The Brutalist.” This masterpiece flourished and extended its reach to an impressive 68 theaters, generating a staggering $1.4 million in revenue. Remarkably, each theater screened the movie for an average gross of $20,408 – truly an eye-popping figure! Interestingly, it narrowly missed out on the top ten spots, trailing Roadside Attractions’ acclaimed awards contender, “The Last Showgirl,” which raked in $1.5 million across 870 locations.
At the pinnacle of the box office, Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King maintained its second position, collecting $13.2 million. This movie has now surpassed a global gross of $540 million. Additionally, Disney secured fifth place with Moana 2, earning an additional $6.5 million domestically, edging closer to becoming part of the billion-dollar club globally. By the end of Sunday, this animated juggernaut had amassed an estimated $989.8 million in worldwide ticket sales.
In a significant achievement, the movie “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” from Paramount surpassed the $200 million mark in domestic earnings, a notable milestone for the film. In North America, it earned $11 million, coming in third place, with the Focus Features’ dark vampire tale titled “Nosferatu” following close behind, earning $6.8 million. With this latest take, the total domestic earnings of “Nosferatu” now stand at $81.8 million.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that although “A Complete Unknown” didn’t take home the top prize at the Searchlight Awards, it certainly made a significant impact! It managed to surpass the $50 million mark domestically, raking in an impressive $5 million along the way.
More to come.
