Box Office: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ Flies to Impressive $11.1M in Previews

As a gamer, I’m totally hyped! The live-action version of “How to Train Your Dragon,” jointly produced by Universal and DreamWorks Animation, soared to a staggering $11.1 million during its previews, leaving me eager for its official release.

The total amounts to approximately $11.1 million, with $8.6 million earned during regular Thursday previews and an additional $2.5 million from Wednesday’s early access screenings. This has made it one of the strongest performances so far this year.

The family movie is predicted to secure its first-place finish at the box office during June 13-15, with an estimated opening weekend of $75 million. This figure might even increase given the positive response from previews and early reviews. As of Friday morning, it currently holds a 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have given it a score of 77%.

The family film is projected to win its initial victory at the June 13-15 box office, with an anticipated debut of $75 million. However, this number could rise due to strong preview earnings and positive feedback. As of Friday morning, it’s garnered a 99% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics have given it a score of 77%.

The animated movie, “How to Train Your Dragon“, is expected to dethrone Disney’s blockbuster live-action film, “Lilo & Stitch“, from its position at the top of the box office. This is because, earlier this week, “Lilo & Stitch” surpassed the $800 million mark in global box office earnings and has been number one for three consecutive weekends while setting several records.

For the very first time, Universal Studios and DreamWorks Animation (DWA) are adapting an animated film of theirs into a real-life version, similar to what Disney does with some of their movies.

Film director Dean DeBlois, often associated with the “How to Train Your Dragon” series, is back to oversee the remake of the initial 2010 film that ignited a string of sequels and various spin-offs. This iconic franchise, centered around a young Viking boy named Hiccup and his secret friendship with a formidable Night Fury dragon named Toothless, has raked in over $1.6 billion worldwide from box office earnings to date.

The movie ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is poised to dominate Imax screens that were previously held by the Tom Cruise-led ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’ for three consecutive weekends, as both films utilized Imax cameras for specific scenes. This weekend, ‘Dragon’ will also command a significant number of large-format screens.

Overseas, it opens this weekend in its first 53 markets.

In the upcoming live-action version, Gerard Butler reprises his role as Hiccup’s father and village leader, a character he voiced in previous films. Meanwhile, Mason Thames takes on the role of Hiccup, having been seen in ‘The Black Phone’ and ‘For All Mankind’.

As a fan, I’m thrilled to mention that this movie features Julian Dennison from Deadpool 2, Gabriel Howell known for Bodies, Bronwyn James who shone in Wicked, Harry Trevaldwyn from Smothered, Ruth Codd of The Midnight Club, the BAFTA-nominated Peter Serafinowicz, best recognized for Guardians of the Galaxy, and Murray McArthur, a familiar face from Game of Thrones.

The movie series called “How To Train Your Dragon” was motivated by the popular book collection penned by Cressida Cowell.
