As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, I was pretty hyped for Sony’s R-rated comic book movie, “Kraven the Hunter,” but it seems like things aren’t going as planned. In its domestic box office debut, it only managed to grab $4.7 million, trailing even behind its sister film, “Madame Web.” Quite unexpected, isn’t it?

Predicted to debut in third position, the movie is anticipated to earn between $10 million and $12 million. This would mark a disappointing start compared to other films based on Marvel comic book characters, surpassed only by the opening of ‘Elektra’ many years ago which grossed $12.4 million (unadjusted for inflation).

Friday’s haul included $2.2 million in previews.

Reviewers are ravaging the film, while audiences slapped it with a C CinemaScore.

In “Kraven,” featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the title character, production expenses escalated from an estimated $90 million to $110 million due to delays caused by the pandemic and strikes. Its premiere date was also repeatedly postponed. Joining Taylor-Johnson in this action-thriller directed by J.C. Chandor are Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger, and Alessandro Nivola. The story revolves around the vigilante son of a Russian mobster who possesses extraordinary strength.

Sony is facing yet another potential challenge with the release of “Kraven” after the struggles with “Madame Web.” The studio, which holds rights to numerous Spider-Man characters, is positioning this film as an R-rated action thriller similar to movies like “John Wick,” rather than a traditional comic book adaptation.

As a diehard fan, I’m excitedly anticipating the weekend debut of “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” from Warner Bros. and New Line. While it seems it might land in fifth or sixth place with approximately $5 million, this animated feature delves into events that predate the epic storyline of “Lord of the Rings.” According to CinemaScore, it earned a B rating, suggesting it’s a solid watch for fans like myself!

Meanwhile, “Moana 2” and “Wicked” are still shining brightly atop the domestic box office charts. “Gladiator II” is also contributing, as this past weekend’s earnings increased by 19% compared to the same period last year. The “Moana” sequel aims to gather an additional $27 million, while “Wicked” is projected to earn approximately $22.2 million next.
