As a seasoned gamer with a heart that beats for animated blockbusters, I can hardly contain my excitement as I witness the staggering success of Disney’s Moana 2 and Wicked! The thrill of these cinematic marvels unfolding on the big screen is akin to mastering the most challenging levels in my favorite video games.
In its second week, the hit sequel from Walt Disney Animation Studios titled “Moana 2” is breaking box office records and is projected to earn around $600 million worldwide.
The sequel continues to hold the No. 1 spot, earning an estimated $50 million to $55 million over the three-day weekend. This is a significant leap past the previous record set by another Disney film, Frozen II, which had grossed $35.1 million on this same weekend, unadjusted for inflation.
Universal’s hit movie “Wicked” continues to dominate and is projected to bring in an additional $32.7 million during its third weekend. The success of both “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II” will boost the total domestic earnings, which are expected to double compared to the same period in 2023. Previously, there were concerns that the full-year revenue might not exceed $8 billion, in contrast to $9 billion in 2023. However, current projections suggest a potential revenue of between $8.5 billion and $8.6 billion, representing a shortfall of only 4 percent. (The gap was more than 11 percent before Thanksgiving.)
In just ten days since its release, the second installment of Moana has surpassed the entire domestic lifetime gross of the original Moana, earning an impressive $11.7 million on Friday alone. By Sunday, its domestic total is projected to exceed $300 million, having already accumulated $259.7 million by Friday. Globally, it’s anticipated that the film will reach a total of around $590-$600 million by Sunday, potentially placing it among the top five films of the year. Remarkably, this means Disney will have three out of the top five movies of the year, with Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine being the other two titles on the list.
On Friday, Wicked made $9.6 million, while Gladiator II earned $3.6 million. It’s predicted that Gladiator II will generate an additional $13 million by the end of the weekend, bringing its domestic total to approximately $133.2 million as of Sunday.
