Box Office: ‘Mufasa,’ ‘One of Them Days’ Draw Blood From ‘Wolf Man’ Over Sluggish MLK Weekend

In simpler terms, “The Lion King” is neck and neck with “One of Them Days,” a female-led Black comedy since “Girls Trip,” at the box office for the top spot during Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. Meanwhile, “Wolf Man” has taken a hit in ticket sales.

The unfortunate prediction is that Martin Luther King Jr. weekend may see significantly reduced activity this year, as both Hollywood and cinemas brace themselves for a potential downturn in film releases during the first quarter of 2025, which could lead to another slow period.

Most predict that Disney’s movie Mufasa will end up dominating the long holiday weekend, earning over $14.7 million, as it now stands as the second film in 15 years to surpass $200 million domestically, despite initially opening with less than $40 million. (By Monday, it is anticipated that the movie will have grossed over $210 million in domestic box office sales.) Additionally, Disney will be celebrating the animated Thanksgiving hit Moana 2 this weekend as it enters the billion-dollar club, becoming the third film of 2024 released by Disney to earn over $1 billion, following Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine.

Insiders at Sony and Tri-Star are anticipating that the film “One of Them Days” will open to a four-day weekend gross of around $14 million to $15 million, surpassing expectations due to its outstanding reviews and exit polls, an A- CinemaScore, and strong connection with its intended audience. Notably, black moviegoers accounted for 46% of ticket sales on the film’s opening day.

One of Them Days is a movie produced by acclaimed figure Issa Rae, featuring Keke Palmer and SZA in her first leading role on the big screen. This film revolves around two friends who experience a particularly bad day. Directed by Lawrence Lamont for her first time as a feature film director, it depicts their struggles.

According to predictions from Blumhouse and Universal, the film “Wolf Man” is estimated to take third place at the box office with approximately $12 million. This falls significantly short of the anticipated $20 million earnings. The movie has received mediocre reviews and poor audience feedback, as indicated by a C- CinemaScore.

The new Wolf Man reboot by Hollywood isn’t shy on quality, boasting the collaboration of Blumhouse and writer-director Leigh Whannell, who were instrumental in the success of 2020’s The Invisible Man, which raked in over $144 million worldwide.

In this chilling tale, titled “Wolf Man”, actor Christopher Abbott portrays a man from San Francisco who, along with his wife, Julia Garner, and their children, ventures to his old childhood home in a secluded location. However, as they settle in, he begins an alarming transformation into something unfamiliar, while the family must battle against a horrifying entity that threatens them both within their home and outside its walls.

The highly successful family movie from Paramount, titled “Sonic the Hedgehog 3“, is projected to finish fourth in its fifth week, earning approximately $10 million. As a goodwill gesture, special free screenings are being arranged for areas affected by fires in Los Angeles on Monday. In fifth place, we find the sequel “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera“, which is expected to make between $9 million and $10 million in its second weekend.

Full numbers will be updated Sunday morning.
