As a die-hard movie fan with a soft spot for Christmas classics and action-packed adventures, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming release of “Red One”! With Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans teaming up to save Christmas, it’s like a dream come true.
It’s Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans to the rescue.
There’s optimism, regardless, as their latest Christmas film, “Red One,” premieres nationwide this weekend following a challenging autumn. Predictions indicate that the action-adventure movie could rake in between $30 million and $35 million for Amazon MGM Studios upon its release, with potential for a lengthy run throughout the holiday season (fingers crossed).
Given its production cost of $250 million, it’s inevitable that discussions about the movie’s box office performance will abound. Typically, such a high-budget film from a major studio would face intense scrutiny if it opened to similar figures. However, Amazon argues that its business strategy revolves around subscribers rather than just box office returns. Furthermore, they aim to establish a new film franchise with this release.
Exhibitors are undoubtedly thrilled to debut the first full-fledged Christmas film since the pandemic, following “The Grinch” release in 2018, especially given the impressive roster of stars involved.
In a PG-13 movie adventure, we find ourselves in the tale of when Santa Claus, also known as “Red One,” gets kidnapped. The head of security at the North Pole, named Johnson, joins forces with the world’s most notorious bounty hunter, Evans, on an international mission that’s filled with non-stop action to rescue Christmas. As described by Amazon MGM, this story takes us on a thrilling journey around the globe.
Under the direction of Jake Kasdan, and written by Chris Morgan with a story concept by Hiram Garcia, the movie titled Red One boasts an impressive cast including Lucy Liu, Kiernan Shipka, Bonnie Hunt, Kristofer Hivju, Nick Kroll, Wesley Kimmel, and J.K. Simmons. In the United States, it has been rated PG-13, but U.S reviews have been less than favorable.
As a gamer, I’m looking forward to diving into the first of several big-ticket releases slated for the end of the year. On November 22, it’s a double feature with Universal’s “Wicked” and Paramount’s “Gladiator II”. The following week, on November 27, Walt Disney Animation’s “Moana 2” takes center stage. Some folks have nicknamed this blockbuster stretch the “Moanapocalypse” or the “Glicked”, but I can’t wait to see what these movies bring to the table!
Amazon Studios and MGM have launched a comprehensive promotional effort for the film “Red One“. This includes advertisements during significant sports events, organizing a wide-reaching screening tour, and sending cast members on trips to various locations worldwide.
Additionally, the studio carried out several local marketing efforts to engage multicultural communities. Amazon teamed up with It’s Boba Time, a well-known boba company owned by AAPI individuals, across all 88 of their branches for a fortnight and introduced a special drink named “Missing Santa,” themed after the iconic character Red One. The studio also collaborated with five local Black-owned coffee shops and bakeries to provide free drinks themed around Red One during the film’s premiere week. Notable locations included Hilltop in Los Angeles and Sip and Savor in Chicago. Furthermore, activations were conducted in 13 stores within the Los Angeles area in partnership with a popular retailer catering to the Latine community, Curacao.
Warner Bros. Pictures has taken on the global distribution of the Seven Bucks Productions’ film, which saw an early international release that grossed approximately $26 million in its first week.
Prior to acquiring MGM, Amazon had already given approval for the production of “Red One“. According to insiders, the movie’s success will be determined by its performance at global box offices as well as its reception on Prime during this holiday season and in the years ahead. In simpler terms, the aim is for it to establish itself as an enduring holiday classic.
