As a die-hard movie buff with decades of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must say this weekend at the box office presents quite the intriguing mix of old and new, traditional and experimental.
This weekend’s fresh releases at the movie theater are quite an unconventional mix, if not offering a bit of unexpected flavor.
Among the safest and most conventional choices lies the heartwarming animated film by DreamWorks and Universal, titled “The Wild Robot“, which is adapted from Peter Brown’s cherished bestseller. This story revolves around a robot named ROZ, who forges an unforeseen connection with a homeless gosling and other island inhabitants after finding herself stranded following a shipwreck on a secluded island.
The highly praised computer-generated animation movie is projected to debut domestically with earnings around $24 million, but some optimists predict it could surpass $30 million without much effort. However, the filmmakers are trying to manage expectations by suggesting a take of over $20 million following the domestic opening of last weekend’s Transformers One, another animated PG-rated movie, which only grossed $24.6 million – $5 million less than projected.
As a gaming enthusiast diving into the world of narrative, I find myself captivated by “The Wild Robot” – a tale bridging nature and technology. This masterpiece is skillfully directed and written by the talented Oscar-nominee Chris Sanders, known for his work on movies like “How to Train Your Dragon” and “The Croods”. The impressive ensemble cast is spearheaded by Lupita Nyong’o, Kit Connor, Pedro Pascal, Catherine O’Hara, Bill Nighy, and Stephanie Hsu. Also joining the ranks are pop icons Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. To top it all off, we have iconic voices like those of Mark Hamill, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames adding their charm to this production.
In simpler terms, it’s anticipated that “The Wild Robot” will surpass the weekend box office performances of the ongoing films “Transformers One” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice“.
The landing spot of other newcomers is a significant uncertainty – specifically, the dystopian epic by Francis Ford Coppola titled Megalopolis. Predictions indicate that this film, featuring Adam Driver, might garner between $5 million and $7 million in revenue. However, considering it cost $120 million to produce before marketing expenses, such earnings would constitute a financial catastrophe for the project.
Despite Francis Ford Coppola’s esteemed reputation, no significant Hollywood studio agreed to fund or distribute the film Megalopolis in North America following a preview screening before its world premiere at Cannes Film Festival, where it received generally mediocre reviews. The cast includes Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, and Shia LaBeouf in Coppola’s contemporary retelling of the Roman Empire set on the verge of collapse in modern-day New York City.
In the end, Lionsgate agreed to distribute the film domestically, but they won’t be responsible for covering distribution or marketing expenses. Additionally, Imax has expressed support for Coppola following his use of Imax-certified cameras while filming certain scenes. As a result, “Megalopolis” is scheduled to screen in around 200 Imax theaters, which represents about half of the total number of large-format theaters, during specific playtimes.
Previously this week, during a screening of Megalopolis at the New York Film Festival, Coppola drew a parallel between the movie’s plot and the contemporary political climate in the United States, hinting that the 2024 presidential election might resemble Rome’s decline. These remarks were transmitted to approximately 65 cinemas spread across the U.S. and Canada, courtesy of Imax.
If Coppola criticizes Donald Trump‘s political stance as the Republican presidential candidate, viewers may choose to back “Defending Trump,” a recent documentary by conservative commentator and Trump advocate Dinesh D’Souza that delves into the challenges faced by the nominee in his quest to regain the White House.
D’Souza’s film, collaboratively produced with Trump and frequently promoted by him, is projected to screen in approximately 500 to 700 theaters across the country. The faith-based distributor SDG, known for films like “Am I Racist?“, will be responsible for the release of “Vindicating Trump” in North America. Notable moments include D’Souza interviewing Trump following an assassination attempt where a bullet grazed Trump’s ear.
On select screens in New York and Los Angeles, Sony debuts Jason Reitman’s film “Saturday Night,” a heartfelt tribute to the iconic NBC comedy series “Saturday Night Live,” at four different venues.
